Black Sun Empire represents the finest in dark and tech fuelled dance-floor drum & bass. Since bursting onto the scene back in 2000, they've continued to develop their own unique style and sound, releasing numerous singles as well as five full-length LPs and establishing themselves as leaders in the field. With their impressive DJ skills and inspirational productions, Black Sun Empire has reached far beyond their native Holland. They've toured around the world, with highlights including Glastonbury and numerous other festival appearances, and continue to build on their growing reputation as some of the most exciting and consistent performers in the scene.

From their base in Utrecht, Holland, the Black Sun Empire trio have truly gone global, taking their own brand of high-octane techno-infused drum & bass to audiences worldwide, with over 100 appearances at live stages and clubs in the last year alone.

Their own club night, Blackout, celebrated it's ninth year anniversary in February 2012 and has seen guest appearances from some of the very best artists in drum & bass and dubstep including Goldie, Dom & Roland, Klute, Optical, Spor, Nero, and Bar 9. In 2011 and now onto 2012, Blackout goes on tour with guests and related artists from their three labels (BSE Recordings, oBSEsessions, Shadows of the Empire) and now has a highly successful residency in London at Cable.

Christian  Hoffman,  aka  Toronto  Is  Broken,  has  become  known  for  his  ability  to  tell  a  story  with  his  music,  with  releases  like  ‘This  Way  Up’,  ‘Make  Me  Feel’,  and  ‘Zero  One’  being  strong  examples  of  his  recent  success.  Now,  the  UK  based  producer  is  finally  ready  to  release  his  remarkable  new  album,  ‘You  Are  (Not)  Alone’ on  Viper  Recordings,  since  signing  to  the  label  last  year.  

An  album  with  three  distinct  acts,  ‘You  Are  (Not)  Alone’  is  nothing  if  not  a  work  of  art.  A  pivotal  point  in  Toronto  Is  Broken’s  career,  the  album  seamlessly  picks  up  the  story  set  up  in  his  last  album,  ‘Sector  Nine’,  and  focuses  on  the  main  protagonist’s  struggle  to  find  purpose  in  a  mystical,  dystopian  land.  Steering  away  from  the  traditional  sounds  of  sci-fi  inspired,  post-apocalyptic  neurofunk,  Hoffman  decided  to  instead  focus  on  the  more  mystical,  ambient  side  of  the  genre,  and  the  result  is  truly  stunning.  

Focusing  more  on  intricate,  ethereal  melodies  rather  than  tech-heavy  basslines,  the  album  represents  the  unstoppable  growth  and  success  met  by  Toronto  is  Broken,  first  seen  with  the  release  of  the  first  album  singles:  ‘Make  Me  Feel  /  Trying  to  Find  Home’  in  May  last  year,  followed  by  ‘Spite,  Lessons,  Regrets  &  Promises  /  An  Image  from  the  Outside’  in  December.    

The  first  act  (Tracks  1-6)  sets  the  stage  for  the  album  with  strong  dystopian  vibes;  ‘I  Am’  uses  a  text-to-speech  emulator  to  play  the  role  of  god  over  a  deeply  resounding  neuro  sound.  The  second  act  (tracks  7-12),  explores  the  themes  of  identity,  depression,  religion,  and  addiction  as  the  protagonist  battles  with  her  spirituality,  her  epiphany  materializing  with  ‘Aum’.  Tracks  like  ‘The  Space  Between’  show  Toronto  Is  Broken  confidently  tackling  genres  outside  his  usual  drum  &  bass,  another  testament  to  his  constant  rise  to  success.    

The  final  act  (tracks  13-15),  looks  at  the  idea  of  letting  go,  of  death,  and  of  the  main  character’s  spiritual  awakening.    ‘Weigh  Me  Under’  offers  a  unique,  gentle,  almost  liquid-esque  track  featuring  the  stunning  vocals  of  artist  favourite,  Jodie  Carnall,  all  while  still  maintaining  Toronto  Is  Broken’s  characteristic  fantasy  inspired  sound  in  a  truly  elegant  manner.

Addictive Behaviour started the year promising big things for 2018 and it looks like they are following through as they deliver "Rotation, Pt. 3". This 3rd album in the trilogy is once again loaded with a phenomenal mixture of fresh emerging talent and returning Addictive favourites, both home grown and from across the water. Each artist brings their own unique flavour to the fold but all with that one resounding theme, top notch production!

The Rotation series has always played host to a spectrum of styles from within the Addictive soundscape and Part 3 is another fine example. There's tech heavy thumpers from the likes of Mystic State & Wingz, Mozey, whilst sub-bass rollers are delivered from Invadhertz, Black Opps and Sam Binary. Felix Raymon adds an uplifting slice of production to the collection, meanwhile Sicknote & Sweetpea bring an alternative sinister tone with their experimental collab. Incus drops in with a more minimal cut and topping it off with a lighter liquid vibe are both Release & Wagz and Shodan's additions going in deep. 

This 12 track LP is another great showcase of future thinking drum and bass at its finest and displays the vibrant cutting edge production currently on offer from Addictive Behaviour. Keep your ears to the ground for more from this collective and of course for Part 4 of the growing Rotation anthology.

The creation of this ep, sprouted from the state of dreaming under musical influence. Which in turn, formulated other ideologies relative to lucid dreaming and reveries.

This lead me to manifest a musical narrative based on a theme of mystery and discovery of a foreign land or construct unknown to an individual. Who then ventures through this magical land only to realize that the journey experienced was a figment of ones deep slumber.

I urge you to find your own sense of importance or meaning as it is up for interpretation. However, a lot of the music reflects my life in the time around creating it or through various musical experiences/influences visualising landscapes and worlds.

Featuring some of the most exciting talents in drum & bass, each of the six remixes here offer a sizzling new slant on three of the album’s biggest tracks. All armed with their own character and uncompromising dynamics, it’s a challenge deciding which one to drop first…

‘All Is Lost’ starts the set with the perfect balance of emotional sonic star-gazing and gritty bottom-end welly. With stunning hymn-like vocals from Thomas Oliver and hype-hungry attitude from Youthstar, it’s widely regarded as one of the album’s boldest highlights. Naturally both Memtrix and Telekinesis have stepped up to the massive challenge. 

Lifted fave Memtrix goes first. Opening with teases of the original’s euphoric synths, he lets the vocals breath for one second before BANG: utter bassline sickness takes over. Complete sonic bombardment of the senses, there is no mistaking Memtrix’s direction and focus for this prime-time piece of D&B naughtiness. And there’s no mistaking the raw power of Telekinesis’s remix, either… Igniting with piano-primed ‘lighters up’ intro, we’re soon pushed into the deepest end of the darkness pool with Youthstar’s spitfire delivery, a gut-busting halfstep groove and a murder of distorted bass tones. Flipping to full D&B tempo midway, it’s a strident party piece that will stay in your wallet or playlist from now until the 23rd century.  

Next up, ‘Dawn Of A Dark Day’: A blazing unity of UK grime and Euro neuro, the day Black Sun Empire called up the Foreign Beggars for mic-duties was a game-changing day for the entire bass industry. Naturally both remixes pay respect to the fusion and fire of the original. Prolix takes the original’s swaggering halfstep intro and adds a touch more menace on the low-end and an industrial punch to the beats before dropping into a rampant, rolling speaker-smasher. No face will be left unmelted when you drop this. We guarantee it. Meanwhile Receptor adds his own interpretation with an instant uptempo kickstart and the creative use of drama-drenched cinematic strings and devilish Slayer-level guitars.  

‘Killing The Light’ brings us to a fitting climax with two of drum & bass most distinctive, forward-thinking acts on remix duties. Delicately dressed with the heart-melting vocals of Inne Eysermans, the raw emotion makes ‘Killing The Light’ the closest thing to a ballad Black Sun Empire will ever write. Paying respect to this, Icicle sharpens the kicks and snares, weaves haunting pads into the mix and takes the vocal to the darkest place imaginable. For those looking for more of a laser-snapping edge, look no further than June Miller’s remix; bolstered with a gargantuan bassline and searing sonic flares, the Dutch-Anglo duo have taken the softness and depth of the original and subverted into a priceless peaktime banger that NO D&B DJ should be without this season.
