Another Tolkien song, in excitement for the new Hobbit trailer released today!

Couple of things- this one has some midi sounds in it that make it best with headphones, forgive my terrible attempts at percussion (i. e. hitting my guitar for two minutes), AND LASTLY AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, IMAGINE THIS SUNG BY DWARVES AND NOT ME BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE GRRRREEEAT. Oh, also this is my first time experimenting with the midi voices on garageband (the bass that comes in midway), so I hope that turned out all right as well.

As always, the poetry is by J. R. R. Tolkien and the music is my own.

One of the more childish poems from The Hobbit and despite the parts, still one of the more simple settings, but it was fun. 

The dragon is withered,
His bones are now crumbled;
His armour is shivered,
His splendour is humbled!
Though sword shall be rusted,
And throne and crown perish
With strength that men trusted
And wealth that they cherish,
Here grass is still growing,
And leaves are yet swinging,
The white water flowing,
And elves are yet singing

Day is ended, dim my eyes,
but journey long before me lies.
Farewell, friends! I hear the call.

Bilbo's Last Song

Yo, so my first version of Havens has been floating around and getting a little love, and it made me remember that I hadn’t gotten around to finishing it up how I wanted, primarily because my guitar needs the frets leveled pretty badly.

But! This my newest version of Haven (albeit one that's been sitting on my computer for a few months). Not quite as polished as I’d like because everything I do is messy and a little bit/a lot unfinished, but it's more finished than the older version!

Anyways, if you haven't seen the original, the song and text are both original. This was born out of a reread of the LOTR two summers ago and being particularly moved by Frodo's choice to leave Middle Earth as well as months of dealing with a chronic pain condition last year.

Havens

a draft of the first part of a bigger project; the first minute is fairly slow, but it picks up soon enough, no worries. I've never written anything like this before, so hopefully, though it's still messy, it's not so awful. 

The very beginning will probably be expanded to be more fitting to the text, the transitions are super messy and don't flow well, some of the harmonies clash and need adjusting, or just need to be filled in- all in all, very much a wip.

But it's so far away from anything I've done before, feedback is really, really appreciated.

Ainulindalë

I’ve been getting a handful of people asking after this song, so I thought I'd attempt it: here goes! Sorry for the blips in the recording towards the end. Music is mine- poetry is Tolkien’s.

"The leaves were long, the grass was green,
The hemlock-umbels tall and fair,
And in the glade a light was seen
Of stars in shadow shimmering.
Tinuviel was dancing there
To music of a pipe unseen,
And light of stars was in her hair,
And in her raiment glimmering.

There Beren came from mountains cold.
And lost he wandered under leaves,
And where the Elven-river rolled
He walked alone and sorrowing.
He peered between the hemlock-leaves
And saw in wonder flowers of gold
Upon her mantle and her sleeves,
And her hair like shadow following.

Enchantment healed his weary feet
That over hills were doomed to roam;
And forth he hastened, strong and fleet,
And grasped at moonbeams glistening.
Through woven woods in Elvenhome
She lightly fled on dancing feet,
And left him lonely still to roam
In the silent forest listening.

He heard there oft the flying sound
Of feet as light as linden-leaves,
Or music welling underground,
In hidden hollows quavering.

The Lay of Luthien

Here is a super rough version of an original setting of another J. R. R. Tolkien poem someone asked me to do. Like Kortirion Among the Trees, it's incredibly long and wordy and the number of lines in each stanza changes, so it sort of stumbles in places- sorry!

'Twas in the Land of Willows where the grass is long and green—
I was fingering my harp-strings, for a wind had crept unseen
And was speaking in the tree-tops, while the voices of the reeds
Were whispering reedy whispers as the sunset touched the meads
Inland musics subtly magic that those reeds alone could weave
'Twas in the Land of Willows that once Ylmir came at eve.

In the twilight by the river on a hollow thing of shell
He made immortal music, till my heart beneath his spell
Was broken in the twilight, and the meadows faded dim
To great grey waters heaving round the rocks where sea-birds swim.

I heard them wailing round me where the black cliffs towered high
And the old primeval starlight flickered palely in the sky.
In that dim and perilous region in whose great tempestuous ways
I heard no sound of men's voices, in those eldest of the days,
I sat on the ruined margin of the deep-voiced echoing sea
Whose roaring foaming music crashed in endless cadency
On the land besieged for ever in an aeon of assaults
And torn in towers and pinnacles and caverned in great vaults;
And its arches shook with thunder and its feet were piled with shapes
Riven in old sea-warfare from those crags and sable capes.

Lo! I heard the embattled tempest roaring up behind the tide
When the trumpet of the first winds sounded, and the grey sea sang and cried
