"Terra di Linda" evokes the nostalgia of leaving home and the anticipation of returning. Stuck in the constant ebb and flow of transit from one place to another, the listener never reaches his or her desired destination, but is left with the evolving emotions that arise in transit. The introduction incorporates soundscapes recorded while waiting to board a plane from Midway Airport (Chicago) departing for San Francisco - a trip I became all too familiar with during the five years I spent living in Chicago.

A mysterious, recurring beep from the schoolyard on the other side of my back fence sounding at the frequency of 3200 (G7). Whatever it is, it's still beeping at random intervals and with varied attacks and decibel levels.

It's the kind of hope that one discovers in the depths of the night, when the only other activity is the clanking of steel wheels against elevated tracks. The sound entices you to walk outside and get some much-needed time and space alone. It is in those restless moments that one discovers a new hope from an inspiration that could only come alive in the mind and soul.

City Of Gods - Aedes Aegypti

I chose to study the syntax structure and note contours of the song of the American Robin, which I had recorded extensively in Chicago. Using a Markov analysis, I identified separate elements that together formed a complete sentence. I then broke it down into several basic figures which each had its own variation and timbre. Using a program called LISP, I employed these figures as the basis for a Markov-like algorithm which could spit out each figure of the bird song as one long sentence including pauses, interruptions, restarts, and slight variations on the original figure.

The resulting product is eight outputs representing eight American Robins in a tree with staggered entrances and exists. The results are particularly interesting when all eight computer Robins are "singing" at once.

Part I employs the sample of an old air raid siren posing as a convolution reverb in the Space Designer tool. Part II uses the same technique, this time with a sample of an acoustic guitar riff that has been processed with delay effects.
