The one instruction for this week's Disquiet Junto assignment was to use an octave leap, which is something I quite often do anyway. 

So, I just set about writing a new track without thinking too hard about the brief. I actually started with the percussion that shows up later in the track.

The root on the opening part steps down an octave before introducing the next chord in the progression.

A two-note synth part is just the minor 7 on two octaves (with a major 6 once for colour - still fits the Dorian mode but is pretty HELLO when it shows up imo).

A second synth part doubles the guitar harmonic sounds, coming in via an opening low-pass filter. That synth part has its pitch modulated by a little step sequence, so it steps up one or two octaves, and the rate at which that's happening in shifting about. That part then runs into a delay (Valhalla Delay) which as a descending octave shift in the feedback patch.

A synth bass part arrives later that is just sustained notes following the root of each chord, but an arpeggiator steps up and down an octave. Kind of like with the pitch modulation on the other synth, the tempo of the arpeggiator is being modulated by an LFO, then quantised, to make it less synth disco / Girls & Boys.

I used a track on which I was already working on and added automatic tools to randomly add or substract up to two octaves to all tracks. The probability was chosen so that the octave jumps should go unnoticed.

Disquiet Junto Project 0684: Early Bird
The Assignment: Record not so much an alarm as a guided wakening.

Step 1: You are going to record a piece of music intended for someone to listen to almost immediately upon waking up. Think about your mornings, and what a more optimal morning might entail.

Step 2: Consider a scenario in which someone wakes up and, rather than look at their work or check the news, they take a period of time to just get centered. Think about how long you might want this to take, say three minutes, or five minutes, or twenty minutes.

Step 3: Consider the stages of awakening, from quiet to loud, from slow to fast (or a middling pace), from simple to complex. Perhaps the sounds go full circle, returning to where they started.

Step 4: Consider what sound at the end — a gong, a bell, a bird call, etc. — might signal that the waking process has concluded.

Step 5: Having reflected on the topics brought up in the instructions thus far, record a track that might guide someone slowly into consciousness upon waking each morning.

This week, members of the Disquiet Junto were invited to make a piece of music intended for listening to while awakening from sleep. My first thought was, "I'm going to try really hard to not make this creepy." Was I successful?

The title is an anagram of my full name— how cool is that? My composition is, as Bjork might say, not only musical but scientifical. I'm using binaural mixing to create a 6Hz oscillation that slowly transitions from theta waves to alpha waves, providing neural feedback that guides the listener from a  meditative state to a calmly wakeful one. Note that you can only experience this effect using headphones.

This track features many layers of evolving pads, gentle ebow guitar, and integrated field recordings. You might be surprised at which ones are which. The vocals are organic. 

Please tell me it's not creepy.

The track starts off with simulated bird sounds, courtesy of the Wing Pinger. Gradually, a C+ chord emerges, which is then joined by a bouncy sequence and eventually a rather standard techno beat, which will hopefully get one out of bed and onto the sidewalk for a good morning run.
