We were happy to cross paths at Mostra last year where she played an incredible live drone set, and even happier to showcase her talents through this mix series. Much like her productions, the mix encompasses all the nuance, and emotional depth that we love in Ambient music. Hitting those poignant moments and providing space for introspection. "This is a DJ set recorded on November 25, 2022 at Forestlimit in Tokyo.

I really like that when I listen to music, when I close my eyes and concentrate on the sound, I get the feeling that various things, such as sound particles and waves, are entering me. It feels very comfortable as it feels like you are facing your own feelings. 

Knowing who you really are is very important, and it's almost like a theme in life. When I make music or play a DJset, I want to help people relax and take time with themselves."

Due to personal reasons - I am in the middle of a PhD project that requires all my attention - the 'studio bb' project has been offline for the last few months. Now that I have more time, the podcast series 'Identity formation' will continue as usual with one episode per month. There are a lot of great artists in the pipeline and can't wait to share all the great mixes with you.

Identity formation listening session - 12 - Return [by iwamaki]

Our mid-week listening session comes courtesy of multi-disciplinary Japanese artist, Makiko Iwaki, under her DJ alias, Iwamaki.

Aside from gracing the world with beautifully woven, introspective DJ sets, she performs live, and produces stunning drone and deep techno sounds under her alias, Menou. Having performed live at Barcelona’s Mostra festival, and releasing music on a string of labels, such as Orbitando, Initiate, and Accents, Iwamaki’s journey as an artist is one to keep your eyes on.

This mix is a live DJ set, recorded just three-weeks ago from MIMINOIMI at Polaris Tokyo, where she layered many sounds, and a unique fusion was born in that very moment.
