AfricaNow! April 24, 2024 Dealing with the Challenges of Climate Change & El Niño

Topic and Guests: In recent years the impact on the African continent of climate change has been demonstrated by the increased frequency of devastating cyclones in Southeast Africa such as Cyclone Freddy in 2023 or the Sahel and West Africa’s heatwave of late March and early April 2024.  Parts of the continent are also being adversely affected by El Niño—which is associated with a rise in temperatures.  In a report released on April 18, 2024 the World Weather Attribution notes that El Niño is “a key driver” of the current drought in southern Africa (El Niño key driver of drought in highly vulnerable Southern African countries, World Weather Attribution, April 18, 2024   https://www.worldweatherattribution.org/el-nino-key-driver-of-drought-in-highly-vulnerable-southern-african-countries/).  According to news reports the United Nations recently noted that southern Africa has an estimated 20 million people who face “acute hunger” (Drought Pushes Millions Into ‘Acute Hunger’ in Southern Africa, The New York Times, by Somini Sengupta and Manuela Andreoni  April 18, 2024 https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/18/climate/drought-southern-africa.html) 

As we commemorate Earth Day, which was on April 22, today the show focuses on the impact of climate change on the African continent, the negative role of multinational corporations, grassroots solutions to adapt to and to mitigate climate change and more.  Also highlighted is the drought in southern Africa escalated by El Niño.  Joining the show are  Anne Maina, National Coordinator of the Biodiversity and Biosafety Association of Kenya, and Estacio Valoi, an investigative journalist based in Mozambique and is with the Centre for Investigative Journalism (CIJ).
