GOLDEN AGE OF CUBAN MUSIC
On January 8, 1959, Fidel Castro and his ragtag army marched into Havana and proclaimed victory in the Cuban revolution. Much of the world knew Cuba primarily from its 1930 megahit "El Manicero" ("The Peanut Vendor") and from the mambo craze of the 1950's. After Castro came to power, the economic, political and cultural doors between Cuba and the U.S. would soon be shut. The doors opened briefly for tours by Cuban artists in the U.S. under the Carter and Clinton administrations. They've shut again tightly under President Bush. What will happen in the new world of President Obama? Time will tell, but indications are that change is coming. In this encore broadcast, we savor sounds from the pre-Revolutionary golden age of Cuban music that sets the scene for the international success of Cuban music. We illustrate how popular music in Africa and the Americas is not imaginable without the influence of Cuban music--copied and adapted on three continents. We'll hear the stories and rare recordings of such core styles as son as well as luminaries such as Beny Moré, Arsenio Rodriguez, Celia Cruz and the Sexteto Habanero; along with less well known artists.

In Africa, drums don't only play rhythms, they send messages. “Ancient Text Messages: Batá Drums in a Changing World” explores an endangered tradition of drum speech in Nigeria, and how that tradition changed and thrived in Cuba, where large numbers of enslaved Yoruba arrived in the 19th century. Producer Ned Sublette speaks with ethnomusicologist Amanda Villepastour, language technician Tunde Adegbola, and drummer Kenneth Schweitzer about how language and music overlap.

Our recent Hip Deep in Mali series explored fascinating stories of art and life in post-crisis Mali. On this program, it's just the music. We hear new sounds from veteran maestros Djelimady Tounkara and Cheikh Tidiane Seck, Wassoulou music star Nahawa Doumbia, mesmerizing Songhai songs from Baba Salah and Samba Toure, and balafon pyrotechnics from Bassidi Kone. We also meet some new ensembles: the Afrojazz of Mamadou Barry, and the bracing roots-pop of Bamba Wassoulou Groove, and sample the latest in Malian rap.

One of the most-recorded songs ever, Moises Simón's composition "El Manisero" (The Peanut Vendor) became a worldwide hit in 1931, bringing the Cuban son to dancers everywhere and permanently changing the musical landscape, just in time for the age of movie musicals. Producer Ned Sublette talks to Cuban musicologist and discographer Cristóbal Díaz Ayala, author of Si te quieres por el pico divertir: historia del pregón musical latinoamericano and many other books; and to Robin D. Moore, author of Nationalizing Blackness: Afrocubanismo and Artistic Revolution in Havana, 1920-1940, about the Cuban musical world of danzón, trova, and son that the song came out of.

The Peanut Vendor

On this visit to 1990's carnival in Santiago de Cuba, producer Ned Sublette recorded the comparsa of Santiago's famed Barrio de los Hoyos as they wound their way through the streets of Santiago at night, and visited Santiago's Tumba Francesa, which carries on 200-year-old traditions from neighboring Saint-Domingue (now Haiti). It also includes then-new hits from Havana, including the first U.S. airplay of music by NG La Banda and Dan Den.

The first of Afropop Worldwide's groundbreaking visits to Cuba, as well as the first APWW program produced by Ned Sublette, this 1990 program opened up a whole new world of music to North American listeners at a time when contemporary Cuban music was almost entirely unknown in the U.S. The program includes a visit to the home of Juan Formell, director of Los Van Van, and an incredible live recording of Los Van Van's "Aquí El Que Baila Gana," the best existing audio documentation of how the group sounded in that period.

In No Church in the Wild: Anarchy and Visual Culture, Jack Halberstam will talk about their new book on 'The Wild,' where Halberstam turns to anarchist thought to elaborate a queer politics and aesthetics for this particular moment of crisis and renewal. Occupy movements and other global expressions of radical dissent have signaled widespread discontent and new art responds to the challenge of thinking otherwise.

The talk will be followed by an in-conversation with Dr Stephen Wilson.

Jack Halberstam is Professor of American Studies and Ethnicity Gender Studies and Comparative Literature at USC. Halberstam works in the areas of popular, visual and queer culture with an emphasis on subcultures.
