Originating from the wild depths of West Sussex; Paul Messis is a singer-songwriter who writes and creates authentic 60s styled garage songs which perfectly suit as a soundtrack, the zeitgeist of his society and generation.

While he may be a new face to some, or perhaps a self-described 'unknown', the fact of the matter is Paul and his songs are the real deal!

Paul encapsulates many different styles of the garage genre in his songs and music, whilst still sounding new and fresh, songs written from the heart with a hint of personal influence and emotion, all in all making Paul Messis one of the lost great songwriters of his generation and the current underground music scene.

Heartache Records (incl. Floppy Records) was formed in 1987 in Rugby by brothers Adam and Chris Gillison for the purpose of promoting unknown or little known bands (and having some fun)...

The label's name was only agreed in time for its second release - a cassette tape compilation entitled 'Breaking Down The Walls Of Heartache', in honour of the Johnny Johnson and the Bandwagon classic covered by Dexy's Midnight Runners. This compilation has the catalogue number Heartache 001.

The label's first release however, was the mysterious Heartache 000, a cassette tape compilation called 'The Holy Bible'. This release carried no catalogue number and was not included in subsequent Heartache Records back catalogue listings.

Heartache's 7" releases were via subsidiary Floppy Records, named in recognition of the fact that the first release was a flexi disc. The 'Heartache' prefix was replaced with 'Flop' for these catalogue numbers.

The compilation's name alluded to the label's belief that the bands featured would soon be revered and respected almost religiously. It featured, among others, The Wedding Present, Spacemen 3, Loop, The Jazz Butcher and The Darkside (at that time still called The Dark Side), all of whom went on to find significant fame and notoriety.

Testament to the label's vision, initial sales for this compilation were pitiful. It was only after Heartache 002 was released that sales of Heartache 001 far outstripped those of Heartache 002.

The cover star is drummer Charlie Watts from the Rolling Stones' Green Park photoshoot in 1967. The edge of Mick Jagger's head in the original photograph forms Charlie's left hand stuffed in pocket.

Whatever Happened To Dorothy Hopkins?

Dorothy Hopkins became a local z-list celebrity in Rugby (+ environs) after delivering a stinging attack on the blasphemous nature of the title of Heartache Records' first release in local paper the Rugby Advertiser. She subsequently retired from public life but was rumoured to frequent St Thomas' Hospital in London as depicted on the cover of this cassette tape compilation. It is unknown whether she was a visitor or a patient at the facility, as is her current whereabouts.

Several cassette tape compilations, flexi discs and 7" singles followed. It is hoped the full back catalogue will be digitised and uploaded over the coming months/years, Soundcloud restrictive practices notwithstanding.
