Mix of the Week #491: Magic Jams aka Noema - The Berlinaric Beat

Edinburgh (via Bristol) producer, DJ and balearic psychonaut takes us on a playful exploration through his cosmic arboretum on the Memory of Stolen Bush EP, with four of his own tracks and a very tasty remix from Berlin’s Glenn Astro. Café Lotito draws us into a world of atmospheric chug with dreamy whistles, rich, saturated pads and sneaky acid lines sitting atop a tasteful break and a steady, thudding kick. Gottlieb’s Lament drops the tempo further, into a shimmering, melancholic lagoon of dubby psychedelia, with marimbas and melodicas dancing amongst the mournful, lysergic synth work. The B side steps straight into the dance with the EP’s namesake In The Shadow Of The Oleander, a pulsing, acidic drum machine workout, bustling with percs and bleeps and crunchy rhythms, all set to a backdrop of soaring pads and drifting harmonics. Glenn Astro’s remix of Oleander pumps things up into an epic, maximalist realm with huge synth lines and a squarely pounding rhythm section turning the playful roller into a peak time thumper. Finally the digital bonus track Memories of Hare uses surrealist snippets of colour to pay tribute to a much missed former Bristol haunt, dropping the tempo back down and putting melody and atmosphere front and centre, with a ghostly marimba leading the procession beside staccato guitars and shimmering synths.

We are delighted to have the lovely George Actv on our podcast. A real music lover who plays vinyl and his music selection is absolutely on point. Former resident of the infamous D-Edge club in Sao Palo who now resides in Lausanne and we have had the honor of him playing at one of our afterworks earlier this year. This mix is a top quality vinyl only set! 

Some info from George Actv: 

In Sao Paulo he started performing professionally in 1997, where he was resident DJ D-edge, every Saturday/Sunday after hour. He played practically in all the clubs, underground parties and festivals in Sao Paulo, Hell’s Club, Skoll Beats, TIM festival, etc…. in other states of Brazil and South America too. He also produced his own evenings, such as Sunday Away, every Sunday from 12 p.m. to midnight. During this time, Actv has performed alongside many famous DJs from the global electronic scene such as Jeff Mills, Ricardo Villalobos, AUX 88, UR, Richie Hawtin, Chemical Brothers, SLAM, Aubrey, Mark Ambrose, Kenny Larkin, Derrick Carter, Colin Dale, Anthony Rother, Nicolas Lutz, Stacey Pullen, Kenny Larkin, Thomas Melchior, Sven Vath, Magda, Luke Slater, etc.

As a music producer, he participated in CD compilations distributed at FNAC and Intergroove, for example.

Live Session w/ Kahil El'Zabar (solo)

The Chicago born jazz multi-instrumentalist and composer Kahil El’Zabar produces healing music for the soul. Born in 1953, the talented percussionist collaborated with musical legends such as Dizzy Gillespie, Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Paul Simon, Pharoah Sanders, and many others. El’Zabar continues to mesmerize audiences worldwide with his meditative yet invigorating sound, aiming to promote wellness and spiritual empowerment through his music. With his main musical groups the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble and the Ritual Trio, he released more than 30 albums. 

This live solo performance was recorded back in November 23 for "Kasheme Conversations", an interview series from, with and for music lovers. Kahil shares about his latest album A Time for Healing and how he, as a young jazz musician got connected with the DJ culture back in the 80ies.
