Séance Centre Radio Episode 28 NTS feat: Bruno (Oct 2020) NO BANTER

DJ Earl Grey takes you through a box of music he recently received from the Séance Centre in Canada – a label, publisher and distributor “conjuring timeless music from past, present and future.” Séance Centre was founded in 2017 by Brandon Hocura, previously one half of Invisible City Editions. Since its inception, the label has worked on releases with Beverly Glenn Copeland, Museum of No Art, MJ Lallo, Vito Ricci and has recently begun uncovering underexposed and eccentric dance music through its sub-label Mixed Signals.

The Séance Centre record shop features records from the labels’ own rapidly growing catalogue, fairly-priced unique dead stock finds and a small selection from likeminded labels from across the globe. It’s one of those rare stores where the selections seem like a personal insight into the tastes of the curators.

Along with her partner Saad, she runs everyone's favorite bar, The Little Jerry. God knows how many saucy nights I've had there– early into the morning, dancing, on god knows what, barely holding it together (aren't we all?), having the TIME OF MY LIFE. Each week, we'd all compete for who on staff would win the ultimate title of being Head Cockroach (a nice 4-armed race to the dump).

Before ever chatting with Izaak, mutual friends told us both how much we reminded them of each other. Somewhere in lockdown, we finally connected and have been messaging constantly; about music, but also this vacuum we call life on Earth. One day, we'll meet. For now, friendship takes many forms and this mix is one of them. 

Izaak says the sound is very January, and I'd have to agree. My roommate came in while it was on and said this mix was very sad. I think it feels more like a k-hole. The last thing I really did before the pandemic started was spend 4 days in Detroit. It was exactly a year ago— Ryan, Andi, Benny and Mike invited me to come for the Salon party— and it’s a high that’s sailed me through the stormier nights this past year. 

We spent the days driving around, talking— and every night we cranked deep into the sounds— the ones we recently found, the ones that keep us going, the ones that affirm the intense pleasure of listening. I don’t remember sleeping much while I was there, although I know it must’ve happened. I do remember wondering where this magnificent energy I had came from. 

At some point, the term “Midwestern hospitality” was explained to me, which is unlike any other sweetness I’ve met on the planet. Is Michigan the centre of the universe? Maybe.

This the first in a series of lovers mixes — music by couples who DJ together (no Lovers Rock required). 

The automatic writing show is a free-form, freewheeling, cacophony of sounds; an experiment in friendship; a warm bath for the earwax. Stop, Drop, Listen. 👂
