Iain Taylor and DJ Phrixus are not taking themselves too seriously!

What is it with middle class white kids and the love of black music? And usually the more ghetto the better!!

The Airtight Deejays! White!! Middle Class!!! Ghetto as hell!!!!

To be fair Iain Taylor who was the driving force behind the original Airtight parties in Manchester does have a fairly respectable Hip Hop pedigree. he has toured with acts like DJ Cash Money and Del La Soul, The Jungle Brothers, Grand Master Flash and Lord Finesse, DJ Kentaro from Japan and a host of other talented heads from various ghettos of America. He has even judged a few DMC heats and some MC battles in his time! He’s a bit “Gangster” I guess you could say! 

His father however was a Maths Lecturer and his Granddad was a God fearing Nuclear Physicist so noth that gangster really! They were more working middle class than Middle middle class though, having litterally dragged themselves up to the heady heights of the middle!!

DJ Phrixus (aka Ben Broughton) however is straight outta the Exeter Public School System! But his ghetto credibility is no less important.  Having only recently turned 19, this well-mannered young man has an abundance of musical and technical ability which matched with his ear for raw ghetto edged sounds and crisp 808 rhythms creates something truly special.

They met in 2013 when both were booked to play at the Phoenix in Exeter and through their shared love for broken beat rhythms, 808’s and ironic ghetto-ism’s quickly became friends.  Iain invited Phrixus to play at one of his Airtight parties in Exeter and after an impromptu back to back set which quite literally tore the roof of the place the only natural thing to do was to install the young man as a resident.

Several more “White Hot” sets from Phrixus rumbled through the Airtight calendar during the winter of 2013 / 2014 and so when Iain was asked to host a room at Sankeys in Manchester he immediately insisted on bringing this “hot new talent” along with him.

A Mac laptop and 2 Kontrol X1’s were placed beside the requested 3 CDJ’s and once again the scaffolding had to be called in the day after to fix another torn off nightclub roof.

This month of July in 2014 we proudly present to you our first podcast as “The Airtight Deejays”. It’s 90 minutes of what you should quite rightly expect from 2 white dudes who claim to be “ghetto as hell” but with a few surprises thrown in for good measure.

This month we also launch our “Airtight ReeRubs” Mash Up series.

From the man who mixed the inaugural volume of the seminal ‘Journeys By DJs’ series, gaining him entry into the Guinness book of records for being the first DJ to produce a commercially available mix CD, we still find Mr. Nasty at the helm, box of records at his feet, doing what he has done best for the last quarter of a century.

But Billy Nasty has never been just a DJ, he has enjoyed an extensive recording career and runs two record labels highly-regarded by a broad range of DJs and record buyers alike. With a career spanning 25 years, Billy continues to travel the world as one of the most in-demand DJs, lighting up dancefloors at some of the most prestigious events and infamous clubs across the globe.

From early beginnings playing rare groove and funk to his first forays into acid house during his residency at London’s The Brain Club, to regular slots at seminal London clubs such as Final Frontier, Open All Hours, The Drum Club and Strutt, to having played pretty much every Festival and club worth mentioning ever since, Billy continues to DJ the world over whilst also maintaining a residency with esteemed electronic pioneers BLOC.

On top of his DJing, Billy Nasty has also maintained a strong production presence over the years. Earlier more progressive outings included Shi-Take (with Dave Wesson) or Vinyl Blair (with Chemical Brothers engineer Steve Dub) to his studio collaborations with Gregor Tresher and Anthony Rother on Datapunk, culminating in his current partnership with Keith Tenniswood (aka Radioactive) man as RadioNasty.

In 2013 Billy relaunched his legendary techno and electro imprints, Tortured and Electrix, to critical acclaim. The debut release on Tortured was the RadioNasty ‘Breakin Bad EP’, featuring two stunning Ben Sims remixes as well as two original tracks.

As RadioNasty the pair have unleashed several tracks over the last two years for labels such as Craig Richard’s The Nothing Special and EPM including the (relaunched) Tortured debut release 'Breakin Bad' EP and the 'Clave to the Rhythm' EP on Electrix. The guys were last seen disappearing into the studio bunker, planning the next slew of releases and collaborations, set to emerge over the coming year.

Pelirocco Platters is boadcast twice a week on Brightons community Radioreverb. The show reflects my love and involvement in Punk, Acid House, Soul music etc. 
I've been going to gigs and clubs for 30 years and lived through most of the major youth cults in that time. I also own and run Hotel Pelirocco in Brighton a real Rock n Roll hotel and the show relates stories from the hotel and the people who pass through it's doors.
I also play lots of up and coming Brighton bands - Running Dogs, Two Jackals, Tiny Dragons have all been championed on the show. 
The second half of the show features guests form Punk legends, to Brighton promoters, up and coming bands, authors - all people who love music. They play 8 of there favourite song/ bands and tell there own story, 
not on a promo tour, they just pop in the studio for an hour and chat honestly about what has happened to them along the way.

Sean Johnston has been DJ'ing since his formative years in the frozen North. Acid House Veteran, Techno Survivor, Hardway Bros, Beard Scientist and Freelance Disco Consultant he has played at some of London's landmark clubs including The Promised Land, Sabre Sonic, Club UK, Final Frontier, Disco Bloodbath and was one of the founding residents at London Super Club Cable. He also plays regularly at Voyage Voyage in up and coming Berlin venue Salon Zur Wilden Renate.
His productions, alongside fellow Hardway Bros, Jake Davies and a mysterious South Londoner known only as Rico have graced Sabres of Paradise, Third Mind, Flashcomm and more recently Beard Science, Pointless Edits, Aniligital, History Clock, Astrolab and cult Norwegian act Mungolian Jetset's label Luna Flicks. 
 
Sean's DJ'ing style described by FACT Magazine as "Future Disco" is hard to pin down to one convenient genre, taking in house, disco, re-edits, techno and frankly anything else that takes his fancy. 
 
Alongside Andrew Weatherall he runs and DJ's at A Love From Outer Space, a cult monthly residency at The Drop in North London. The night's manifesto is to never knowingly exceed 122bpm and is home to a multitude of genres including ambient, balearica, dub, krautrock, post punk, proto house, un-disco and other curiosities from the pair's extensive record collections.

Hey, Gareth here, I'm a graphic designer who start designing for clubs, parties, and labels in the late 90s. Back then, mix CDs were the holy grail of both design and music. I loved them.

But I wasn't the only one, mix cds were the soundtracks of our nights, our days, our afterparties and lives, for everyone. Yet in today's internet age, the art form has been lost (or just changed) to 2-3 hour online mixes and streaming videos, which just don't create the same magic your CD collection did. Just 60 minutes of music and incredible artwork.

The Classic Mix CD Series celebrates these discs, their soundtrack, their box art and your memories. We hope you enjoy it.
