Our guest this week is someone very special to our city. Blake Sutherland has blazed the trail in Ottawa for progressive and melodic electronica, a trail we now get to walk with the ease of knowing that our collective taste buds for this music have benefitted from his relentless and passionate work to cultivate and expand them. 

Blake Sutherland has been at the forefront of melodic dance music for over two decades. As founder of Wide Angle Recordings, he has introduced original music from some of scene's most innovative artists, including Max Cooper, Gab Rhome, Deepfunk, Cid Inc, Antrim, and Pole Folder. 

Blake's seminal podcast Cityscape Sessions served as a platform for cutting edge progressive mixes for over 10 years, eventually giving rise to an event series of the same name in his hometown of Ottawa, Canada. Under his direction, Cityscape Sessions ushered in a number of highly influential mixes and played host to some of the biggest melodic dance music names in the world, including Jeremy Olander, Eelke Kleijn, and John 00 Fleming. 

As a DJ, Blake Sutherland's passion for his craft has taken him around the world, with appearances in Canada, the United States, Germany, Netherlands, the UK, and Australia.

This is an exclusive mix by the man himself for Ottawa Prog Vibes, for which we are grateful. Enjoy!

Since the beginning of Cityscape Sessions with show #001, all the way through this month's #206, Blake Sutherland has served as the show's the musical director, if you will. His sound has evolved, which can clearly be heard by listening to the early mixes, but the ethos of Cityscape Sessions has remained largely unchanged. Our guest series continues with a stellar set from one of the top producers in the global hotbed of progressive house, Argentina. 
Alejandro Conde was born in Lionel Messi’s hometown of Rosario, Argentina in 1986. He has become one of Argentina’s top progressive producers. His early influences included bands like The Doors, The Beatles, Depeche Mode and Soda Stereo.

His first encounters with electronic music took place when he was 24 when he assisted on events for major DJ’s like Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren, John Digweed and Sasha. This ended up steering his musical journey towards progressive house. From that experience, he started studying electronic music production in Rosario’s CETEAR school.

His tracks have appeared on major global labels including Balkan Connection (Serbia), Mallam (Croatia), Electronic Tree, BQ Recording (Russia), UY Records (Uruguay), and Nube Music and Amitabha (Argentina). Alejandro’s latest productions were released on labels such as Manual Music, Superordinate, Droid9 Recordings and Thinkabout Records.

If you’re a regular listener of Ottawa Prog Vibes you’ve seen his name on many a tracklist of sets we’ve played. In this set you will hear some exclusive unreleased tracks by the man himself, gifted to us for this podcast.

You’ll see why his music is consistently supported by the likes of Nick Warren, Fernando Ferreyra, Sebastian Busto and Emi Galvan among others.

It was when Hernan Cattaneo played his track “Wave” that I first discovered Scippo. I replayed that track a hundred times and messaged him several times to ask about it. He kept patiently explaining that he was working to have it released on a label. Only Cattaneo and Nick Warren had it. He has since produced several more tracks, each better than the other. And “Wave” will finally be out next year. But you get to hear it on this episode of Ottawa Prog Vibes. Not only that, but Scippo has remixed an exclusive version of “Wave” just for us - see tracklist: “Wave (AM mix)”.

It’s a great joy and honour to introduce Scippo to the listeners of Ottawa Prog Vibes. The man has a sound that is unique to him. He commands groove and melody in his own very personal way and manages to draw a spectrum of emotions out of every set.

Scippo is a DJ and Producer born in Rio Gallegos, Argentina. Since his early studies in music at the age of 15, moving to Buenos Aires two years later fed and inspired his desire towards electronic music. His first set of releases emerged in 2019 through Hernan Cattaneo’s “Sudbeat” label, and followed later by a double appearance on the “Balance Series” Compilation of “The Soundgarden”, curated by Nick Warren. 

His music with unique taste and resourceful grooves has been supported by some of the most acclaimed DJ’s of the industry such as Nick Warren, Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Muir, Mike Griego and many more. Scippo’s forthcoming projects will see the light of day throughout Hope Recordings, with many more on the way…

Our guest series this week brings you a set unlike any you’ve heard on Ottawa Prog Vibes so far. This week we are thrilled to have a banging hour of raw energy courtesy of Ottawa’s Teddy Rockspin.

Those of you who live in Ottawa know this man very well. He has been a mainstay in the lineups of a multitude of events, clubs, parties and festivals. He embodies the vibe of the Ottawa night in a way few others capture. His unapologetic, vigorous musical style has no trouble conveying the atmosphere of the sweaty, raunchy afterhours dancefloors that Ottawa is so hungry to flock to again after this damn pandemic passes.

Teddy Rockspin is a producer and Bass Camp North resident DJ who got started with music playing bass in progressive metal bands. Growing up in the 80s, his influences draw from the sounds of classic video game soundtracks, punk and metal. This shaped his passion for house music and his deep, dark and heavy brooding sound. With a focus on blurring the line between Deep/Tech House and Techno, he aims to bring people together, make them feel and make them move.

ABOUT OTTAWA PROG VIBES

Alain M.'s weekly podcast, Ottawa Prog Vibes, is now in its 7th year and is a recognized presence among Canadian Electronica shows. The show has two goals: showcase progressive DJ's from Ottawa (and Canada) to a global audience, and bring international DJ guests to an Ottawa (and Canadian) audience). 

Alain plays three out of every 10 shows. His mixing has been noted as particularly creative and smooth, a skill that allow his sets to be experienced as seamless stories.

An offshoot series, called Mellow Prog Vibes, is released every two weeks and focuses on more chill vibes, slightly more downtempo, to create a more relaxed vibe. It is curated by OPV resident DJ Boraa, who plays every other episode, with guest DJs playing the alternate.

Ottawa Prog Vibes and Mellow Prog Vibes are broadcast weekly on UK's Saturo Radio, New York's Chill Lover Radio and Ottawa's Blast the Radio.


ABOUT ALAIN M.

Alain M. started dj’ing in his early 20s and played a variety of clubs, big and small, in Ottawa, Montreal and Kingston. From teenage influences in progressive rock, metal and blues, and later New York and Chicago house, Dutch techno and early trance, his style has evolved towards the more melodic, infectiously rhythmic and thoughtful sounds of progressive house, with a particular fondness for Argentinian productions.

Over his 30+ years as a DJ, Alain has cultivated a signature melodic, danceable, and thoughtful style with enough surprises to keep even the most devout listeners on their toes. His live events, organized only a few times annually, are a hypotonic, transformational experience for attendees, putting the Nation’s Capital on the map for electronic music. He has organized and collaborated in a number of events including Levitar, Sunday Meet & Beat, Sit-Down Sessions, Shake my Thursday and Expeditions, attracting a thoughtful crowd who stay mesmerized by his melodic, danceable sets, always peppered with delightfully unexpected sonic elements.

Alain M. is also a guest DJ submitting regular sets to several radio and online outlets. He is a resident on X-Beat Radio (France, Belgium). He was a monthly resident on Abyss Sound Experience on QuestLondon Radio in 2021 and on UK-based Beach Radio between 2021 and 2024.

He has appeared as a guest on a number of shows in several countries including the UK, Argentina, Spain, Poland, Brazil, Sri Lanka, Peru, Turkey, Israel and the US. In Canada, he has been featured as a guest DJ at several events by Ottawa-based Music.Art.Ppl, on CHUO FM’s Vanguard Pulse Radio, on CKCU FM’s Lost In Bass and Mapped Out Radio, on Montreal’s Afterhour radio show and on Toronto’s ION radio show.
