BIO:
Alain M.'s weekly podcast, Ottawa Prog Vibes, regularly charts on Mixcloud's Canadian Top 100 Electronica shows and receives regular contributions from producers from around the world. His mixing has been noted as particularly creative and smooth, a skill that allow his sets to be experienced as seamless stories.

Alain M. started dj’ing in his early 20s and played a variety of clubs, big and small, in Ottawa, Montreal and Kingston. From teenage influences in progressive rock, metal and blues, and later New York and Chicago house, Dutch techno and early trance, his style has evolved towards the more melodic, infectiously rhythmic and thoughtful sounds of progressive house, with a fondness for Argentinian productions. Inspired by prog rock, early Dutch techno, 1990’s trance and New York house, his tastes have evolved towards progressive house, with a particular fondness for Argentinian productions.

Over his 25+ years as a DJ, Alain has cultivated a signature melodic, danceable, and thoughtful style with enough surprises to keep even the most devout listeners on their toes. His live events, organized only a few times annually, are a hypotonic, transformational experience for attendees, putting the Nation’s Capital on the map for electronic music.

Even while providing a sought-after, niche experience, Alain intrinsically understands the value of an intelligent radius, making him a refreshingly strategic act to booking agents. He has organized and collaborated in a number of events including Levitar, Sunday Meet & Beat, and Ottawa Prog Nights, attracting a thoughtful crowd who stay mesmerized by his melodic, danceable sets, always peppered with delightfully unexpected sonic elements. He is working on live and broadcast projects through the difficult COVID lockdowns, always as permitted by applicable health restrictions.

Alain M. is also a guest DJ submitting regular sets to several radio and online outlets. DJ Radio, on Progressive Barcelona and on Progressive House Perú. In Canada, he has been featured as a guest DJ by Ottawa-based Music.Art.Ppl, on CHUO FM’s Vanguard Pulse Radio and on CKCU FM's Lost In Bass. He has also appeared several times on New York-based Chill Lover Radio.

One of my favourite mix CDs in the iconic Global Underground collection is, without a doubt, GU019 - John Digweed Los Angeles, released in 2001. Two decades later that mix hasn’t aged. I must’ve listened to it hundreds of times - and if you have too, you know exactly how it starts - with Pole Folder and CP’s hauntingly trippy track “Apollo Vibes”.

For this episode of Ottawa Prog Vibes, I reach way back into the crate and bring back the unreleased mix of “Apollo Vibes” - an 11-minute opus that epitomizes everything that is brilliant about good electronic music. If you remember this track, this one’s for you :)

As is the tradition every year, the last episode is devoted to my 10 best of the year. In a typical year, I will listen to about 8,000 tracks and play fewer than 600, less than 10 per cent, in my recorded or live sets. Of those 600, the 10 best are for me the ones that I either particularly liked for a variety of reasons, and/or those that got a huge reaction when played live in a gig. Some are from big names, others from lesser known or up-and-coming producers. What I care most about selecting my music is how it makes me feel and therefore what I think I can transmit to those who listen to me playing. 

Each of my top-10 has its own reason for being there, in some cases I like the buildup, in other cases the melody, in other cases the groove, in other cases how they set the table - they are simply my own faves.

Every year I make a mix with my top 10 and it is a different kind of set - the flow of the mix is fundamentally different since this is not a set that I built the same way - and my mixing style for some of the transitions, as you’ll notice, is also a bit different.

He was born in 1979 in the south of Brazil and currently live in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in the city of Canela. He started DJing at the age of 15. At the time there was no CD player or MP3, but the record player. In the early 90's he was inspired by Sasha & John Digweed on the album - "Renaissance: The Mix Collection". At the end of 1999 he played at his last rave with the music style Trance. Currently his hobby is creating mixed sets on social networks. Not for profit, he is committed to electronic music with the aim of making people happy.

ABOUT OTTAWA PROG VIBES

Alain M.'s weekly podcast, Ottawa Prog Vibes, is now in its 7th year and is a recognized presence among Canadian Electronica shows. The show has two goals: showcase progressive DJ's from Ottawa (and Canada) to a global audience, and bring international DJ guests to an Ottawa (and Canadian) audience). 

Alain plays three out of every 10 shows. His mixing has been noted as particularly creative and smooth, a skill that allow his sets to be experienced as seamless stories.

An offshoot series, called Mellow Prog Vibes, is released every two weeks and focuses on more chill vibes, slightly more downtempo, to create a more relaxed vibe. It is curated by OPV resident DJ Boraa, who plays every other episode, with guest DJs playing the alternate.

Ottawa Prog Vibes and Mellow Prog Vibes are broadcast weekly on UK's Saturo Radio, New York's Chill Lover Radio and Ottawa's Blast the Radio.


ABOUT ALAIN M.

Alain M. started dj’ing in his early 20s and played a variety of clubs, big and small, in Ottawa, Montreal and Kingston. From teenage influences in progressive rock, metal and blues, and later New York and Chicago house, Dutch techno and early trance, his style has evolved towards the more melodic, infectiously rhythmic and thoughtful sounds of progressive house, with a particular fondness for Argentinian productions.

Over his 30+ years as a DJ, Alain has cultivated a signature melodic, danceable, and thoughtful style with enough surprises to keep even the most devout listeners on their toes. His live events, organized only a few times annually, are a hypotonic, transformational experience for attendees, putting the Nation’s Capital on the map for electronic music. He has organized and collaborated in a number of events including Levitar, Sunday Meet & Beat, Sit-Down Sessions, Shake my Thursday and Expeditions, attracting a thoughtful crowd who stay mesmerized by his melodic, danceable sets, always peppered with delightfully unexpected sonic elements.

Alain M. is also a guest DJ submitting regular sets to several radio and online outlets. He is a resident on X-Beat Radio (France, Belgium). He was a monthly resident on Abyss Sound Experience on QuestLondon Radio in 2021 and on UK-based Beach Radio between 2021 and 2024.

He has appeared as a guest on a number of shows in several countries including the UK, Argentina, Spain, Poland, Brazil, Sri Lanka, Peru, Turkey, Israel and the US. In Canada, he has been featured as a guest DJ at several events by Ottawa-based Music.Art.Ppl, on CHUO FM’s Vanguard Pulse Radio, on CKCU FM’s Lost In Bass and Mapped Out Radio, on Montreal’s Afterhour radio show and on Toronto’s ION radio show.
