For our first episode of 2022 we are proud to present, in what could become an annual tradition, an exclusive set by the current champion of the World Series of Progressive Sets, a global contest organized every year by with Progressive en España. The 2021 contest featured 46 contestants from 11 countries (including Canada).

The 2021 champion was LEX-NDR from Italy. Born in 1979, discovered his passion for electronic music at childhood, and moved to London at a young age to explore its music scene. Working in clubs and enjoying going out to the best parties he started with house music at first, then trance, while clubbing and organizing parties.

After many years spent “studying” the London club scene, he moved to Palma de Mallorca to enjoy a quieter lifestyle. That is where he met Kobah, DJ & producer, who became not just his best friend but also his teacher in everything that has to do with music. Thanks to Kobah, he started playing and mixing and slowly changed his musical taste to progressive and more underground music. After several years of endless back-to-back sessions and late-night classes, the best is yet to come!

This exclusive set is in fact a B2B with his mentor, Kobah. Born Santiago Ivan Lopez in 1984, Kobah is an Argentine DJ. His interest in electronic music dates back to his adolescence, mainly by listening to progressive and techno music. Back in 2004, DJ’ing became part of his deepest nature and his passion became his obsession; first, by playing in private parties, and then more and more often in bars and clubs all over Argentina.

This set is a pure flow of musical honey, delicious in its melodic discipline, technically flawless, delicate yet very deliberate in its build-up, a real work of progressive elegance.

Our next guest comes from the beautiful city of Resistencia in northern Argentina. Danny Sanchez is an experienced club DJ who also runs Mixing Radio, one of his country’s most consistent online electronic music radios.

Mixing Radio got started in late 2013 as an independent broadcaster with the intent to support local, national and international electronic music artists and producers. Based on the belief that music is a universal language through which to communicate with and unite people across the world, the station has been at the forefront of some of Argentina’s top electronic programming and continues to feature upstart and established artists.

This is an exclusive set for Ottawa Prog Vibes that really captures the essence of Argentina’s progressive sound: it features an expert track selection that builds the story in a very subtle way, has plenty of kick without being overbearing with it, and features a few surprises sprinkled throughout.

Residing in Canada's capital, Ottawa, Turkish DJ/Producer Doga Erbek has been a part of the electronic music scene for over 10 years. As the founder/curator of the Bazaar Müzik podcast series, Doga strives to deliver musical journeys for the audience with deep/melodic/middle eastern sounds that represent his background as an artist.

He has also started establishing himself as a producer, with releases on AMITABHA, ThreeRecords (UK) & Faraway Scope (BE) last year, and future releases to be announced very soon.

We are stoked to introduce our next guest, the incredibly talented @subtractivemusic, a DJ and producer from Grand Rapids, Michigan. 

Subtractive has continued to grow his worldwide footprint with his original tracks. In 2022, just weeks after it’s release, his EP with Bonzai Progressive “The Medici Effect” broke into the top 100 Progressive House releases globally both on Beatport (#72) and Traxsource (#71) and has been supported by DJ’s around the world, with Joseph Capriati (Drumcode, Afterlife), Cristian Varela (Toolroom, Bedrock), Giusseppe Ottaviani (Armada, A State of Trance), and Luciano Scheffer (Warung Recordings, Transensations) all pledging their support. To further emphasize his international presence, In 2021 his track “Last Train to Madrid” on Slur Records reached the #1 spot for Techno in Italy on iTunes, and In 2020 his remix of “StayLoose - Tiny Warrior” reached #1 in Electronic music in the Netherlands on iTunes. 

With a drummer for a father, and a sister who was into illegal street racing, Subtractive’s (Alex Hunt’s) childhood was anything but normal. By age 13, Alex was already hooked by the euphoric, confidence-inducing sounds of electronic dance music; “I used to beg my sister to let me ride along on races... Sometimes she would give in. The days following, I would be asking her what music her friends were listening to in the car.”

After his initial exposure, it didn’t take long for Hunt to dedicate himself to learning the art of music creation. Without means to travel to the more vibrant music scenes of Detroit or Chicago, the young producer spent his nights practicing skills such as mixing, sampling, and synthesis. As years went on, Alex began making the trek from Indiana to Detroit nearly every weekend. With a head full of production knowledge and an eagerness to experience Detroit’s underground party scene, the cards were right for Alex Hunt to undergo a musical transformation; this is when he became Subtractive.

An artist whose eyes and ears are consistently set on the future, Subtractive strives to create music that is totally non-traditional. His compositions explore the limits of electronic sound, while maintaining a rhythm which is irresistible to dancers. Dream-like synth melodies and pristinely processed vocals float over the top of floor-shaking bass, creating a groove which consists of equal parts dance party and introspective voyage. A true master of manipulating energy, Subtractive’s productions take his listeners on a journey that has captivated many across the globe.

This week we have an amazing guest from the hotbed of progressive house, Argentina. Iñaki Mariano is a young DJ and producer from Buenos Aires. 

From a young age he was drawn to music and started DJ’ing at age 14. He got his debut at Club Bahrein, one of Buenos Aires’ iconic venues, in 2018, and has played there several times since. Iñaki has shared decks with the likes of Andrea Casino, Sergio Ahtos, Abel Meyer, Dynacom, Ezequiel Ramirez, Valdovinos and many more.

His sessions are characterized by a clear progressive line through which he leads the narrative through various moments that generate a range of emotions. He draws from genres between deep house and melodic techno, always adapting his live performances to the moment and mood.

Iñaki is co-founder of @gate.prod events production, which has organized large events with top-notch artists like Ezequiel Ramirez, Maxi Degrassi, Dynacom among others. He is also co-founder of the ALTUM MUSIC label (@altummusicok) which has just released its first EP, with support from artists that include Guy J, Nick Warren, Mariano Mellino, Grazziano Rafa, Dj Ruby, Fabri Lopez and several more.

“Distributor of deep, infectious dance grooves and a feel-good atmosphere.” 

That’s how Sam describes himself as a DJ. Never afraid to go too deep, his emotive musical selections are his own therapy.  Having grown up on his parents' beautiful combination of funk and Disco music (James Brown, Donna Summer), Rock'n'roll (Led Zeppelin, Ramones), Flamenco (Gipsy Kings, Camarón de la Isla) … All of which became infused with his own love for house and techno music, Chef ended up with quite a mixed spectrum of musical influence. Today, this translates into sets where he picks apart and infuses together all the pieces of the music that he loves best. 

An active member of his musical community, he loves playing in nightclubs, festivals, patios, pop-ups and special events. His love for music goes beyond the spectrum of mixing tunes. He has found plenty of ways to express himself musically. He also likes to organize private and public events in parks, beaches and islands, just to name a few. He has dedicated himself to helping others become better DJs through his passion for music while giving tips to others and sharing their music along the way.

Lila Rose (UY) is a Uruguayan producer and DJ based in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Born in Tacuarembó, Uruguay in April 1990, Luciana aka Lila Rose, she showed an interest in electronic music since she was a child, although it was in 2019 when she began her studies in music production. Since 2019 she has worked as a DJ in various clubs in Buenos Aires such as Bahrein, Carnal, Downtempo, Lucille, among others.
Her productions are characterized by combining elements of progressive house and melodic techno, focusing on emotional melodies and atmospheres.

In 2020 she released her first EP on AH Digital entitled Blazed, which had the support of great references of Progressive House such as Hernán Cattaneo, Dj Ruby, Mariano Mellino, among others. In 2021 and 2022 she has released remixes and originals on the Balkan Connection, Venture Records and Sinedie Records labels, gaining support from numerous artists on the world scene. Bio:
Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, Loveclub first surfaced in Orlando Florida in the mid 90s,  aka “Domingo Brothers" producing Progressive House and Breaks. Co-founded DB Records, Breaks Collective Records, Pendulum Records. Appeared on such labels as  Paltipus U.K. Limbo Scotland & Blackhole Netherlands. Also toured as a live act/DJ for almost a decade.

In early 2000’s he faded away from the scene to raise a family and began working as an audio engineering instructor, teaching Pro-Tools, Logic, & Postproduction at (Full Sail University) in Winter Park, Florida. Last year Loveclub started dabbling once again working with his brother “ Domingo + “  who never left the scene, full circle.              
Now experimenting on the organic side of things, just here having fun.

BIO: 
Curiosity and the propensity for learning made the architect Ricardo D Carvalho mobilize himself to fulfill a 20-year dream. In 2019, it reinvented itself and succeeded with the Zomero project — which in Esperanto means “summer”. Thus, he ascended into the cosmos that permeates the sounds of house music, proposing a concept of blending the timbres and grooves of deep and melodic house.

After graduating from the Instituto de Música Eletrônica, the pandemic took hold, reorienting the artistic paths of the DJ and producer. In addition to improving techniques, he saw in seclusion an ideal moment to turn lives into a true experimental sound laboratory. So, in addition to presenting and sharpening methods, he helped and encouraged several artists to do the same.

Evidenced by extensive musical research, in 2021 he gave the impetus towards production and debuted with the elegant “Journey”, marked by sounds that fit satisfactorily, whether on the dancefloor or in casual and casual gatherings — a distinct aptitude necessary for contemporaneity. With the reheating of the sector, we can expect a bountiful harvest, planted (and fiercely) accelerated by the restless and slow mind of the promising Zomero.

ABOUT OTTAWA PROG VIBES

Alain M.'s weekly podcast, Ottawa Prog Vibes, is now in its 7th year and is a recognized presence among Canadian Electronica shows. The show has two goals: showcase progressive DJ's from Ottawa (and Canada) to a global audience, and bring international DJ guests to an Ottawa (and Canadian) audience). 

Alain plays three out of every 10 shows. His mixing has been noted as particularly creative and smooth, a skill that allow his sets to be experienced as seamless stories.

An offshoot series, called Mellow Prog Vibes, is released every two weeks and focuses on more chill vibes, slightly more downtempo, to create a more relaxed vibe. It is curated by OPV resident DJ Boraa, who plays every other episode, with guest DJs playing the alternate.

Ottawa Prog Vibes and Mellow Prog Vibes are broadcast weekly on UK's Saturo Radio, New York's Chill Lover Radio and Ottawa's Blast the Radio.


ABOUT ALAIN M.

Alain M. started dj’ing in his early 20s and played a variety of clubs, big and small, in Ottawa, Montreal and Kingston. From teenage influences in progressive rock, metal and blues, and later New York and Chicago house, Dutch techno and early trance, his style has evolved towards the more melodic, infectiously rhythmic and thoughtful sounds of progressive house, with a particular fondness for Argentinian productions.

Over his 30+ years as a DJ, Alain has cultivated a signature melodic, danceable, and thoughtful style with enough surprises to keep even the most devout listeners on their toes. His live events, organized only a few times annually, are a hypotonic, transformational experience for attendees, putting the Nation’s Capital on the map for electronic music. He has organized and collaborated in a number of events including Levitar, Sunday Meet & Beat, Sit-Down Sessions, Shake my Thursday and Expeditions, attracting a thoughtful crowd who stay mesmerized by his melodic, danceable sets, always peppered with delightfully unexpected sonic elements.

Alain M. is also a guest DJ submitting regular sets to several radio and online outlets. He is a resident on X-Beat Radio (France, Belgium). He was a monthly resident on Abyss Sound Experience on QuestLondon Radio in 2021 and on UK-based Beach Radio between 2021 and 2024.

He has appeared as a guest on a number of shows in several countries including the UK, Argentina, Spain, Poland, Brazil, Sri Lanka, Peru, Turkey, Israel and the US. In Canada, he has been featured as a guest DJ at several events by Ottawa-based Music.Art.Ppl, on CHUO FM’s Vanguard Pulse Radio, on CKCU FM’s Lost In Bass and Mapped Out Radio, on Montreal’s Afterhour radio show and on Toronto’s ION radio show.
