When I first took on the challenge of learning ‘Superstition’ I was half way through my music degree. At the time I couldn’t manage to separate the bass line from the melody or even begin to accent the back beat. I persevered, slowly learning each bar until eventually I could perform this piece at my graduation concert.

Superstition

This song is a dedication to my guitar hero - Tommy Emmanuel. He is one of the many important musicians which influenced my path with the guitar. I was fortunate enough to speak briefly with him before his concert in New Zealand, 2015. During our conversation I was able to request ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’, which he dedicated to me later that evening. Needless to say, I was so inspired that night, I practised until the sun came up.

‘Home’ is a sonic representation of my childhood years spent in the countryside of New Zealand. The harmonics are a representation of the Waikato river. The repetition of the first chordal progression stands for the ups and downs of youth and the percussive elements represent the coming of new things. The melody is the people with whom I spent that time with. This song is dedicated to my brother, with whom I share the fondest memories.

‘Amazing Grace’ has always resonated strongly with me. From an early age, its simplistic beauty and lyrical content inspired a sense of wonder. I would listen and imagine going on great adventures to distant places. It’s a great reminder of humble beginnings and remembering where I come from.

‘Baby’s Coming Home’ is beautifully simplistic and relaxing. I decided to place it on the CD as a homage to the many incredible “boom chick” players including Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed and many others that have given me inspiration on my guitar ventures. I borrowed the little run at the end of the song from the one and only Buster B. Jones.
