Alec Harper is a freelance saxophonist and teacher originally from London. He is currently based in Boston, USA, where he is studying Jazz at the New England Conservatory. He graduated in 2012 with a First Class BMus (Hons) in Jazz Performance from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (London). Alec has had the privilege of studying with Jerry Bergonzi, Donny McCaslin, Jason Moran, Stan Sulzman and Mark Hanslip. He has also taken Composition classes with Ken Schaphorst and Frank Carlberg.

Alec has been involved in the London jazz scene for some years now where he has performed with his own quartet and as a sideman at many venues including The Vortex, The Spice Of Life, Charlie Wrights and Olivers Jazz Bar. He also had extensive performance experience at Guildhall, including slots in the London Jazz Festival with the Guildhall Big Band, and concerts with the Southbank Sinfonia.

Alec and 3 fellow students at the New England Conservatory formed the quartet JoggerKnot in September 2012. The group focuses on rock influenced improvised music. JoggerKnot has performed Boston venues such as The Outpost.

Alec is an experienced teacher, both privately and in workshops. He has assisted in many workshops led by the Creative Learning department at London’s Barbican Centre.

In 2010 Alec received the Young Performers Award from UK Jazz Radio. Upon Graduation from Guildhall Alec was awarded a Concert Recital Diploma. He was awarded the prestigious Yamaha Jazz scholarship in 2012. He is generously supported by the Ian Fleming Award from the Musicians Benevolent Fund.
