Over the last 2 years I have been subject to several stages of totally colossal life changes. It has been hard to focus on music, even though I have continued digging and love it as ever. Music has been my lifeblood and given me a sense of meaning since I was a kid. A platform upon which I had a sense of purpose to exist. I started to DJ after my dad died when I was really young (1997). I had already been into it but after this event, collecting and playing records became a crutch, a coping mechanism. It got me through, it was a colourful, intellectually benign yet absorbing way to distract myself from the pain of existence.

One thing I have noticed is that even though privately I have always been deeply obsessed with music, my expression with it publicly has been inconsistent, stuttering based upon how I felt at any given time, allowing life events to eclipse music and stopping me from getting my ideas out there. Also, I allowed various things to block my outlet... "it's not the right style" / "it's too different to all my other mixes" / "it's not a proper underground selection" etc. BULLSHIT!

I have come to a point where I feel settled and ready to commit to a new regular series. I created a variety of DJ mix series in the past: Cement Mix, the ongoing Avenue Red Podcast among others. This one I intend to become my regular heartbeat for reflective, thoughtful, personal expressions with any kind of music.

Labelled in respect of the great philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche (a nod to existentialism, his teachings), it is all about accepting that we are not here for a long time, we are here for a GOOD TIME! It is all about not letting ego, fear regarding acceptance or some creative apathy block access to expressing ones true self in its truest form. Unless our musical expressions are unleashed, released from our minds and committed to the physical world somehow, all of our crazy, precious and unique ideas are gone forever. Blown away and scattered with the sands of time. Once we die, there is no time left, no chance to express anything further and the universe can never know what potentially amazing things were locked up in our minds. This also represents a loss of cultural progress, as discoveries we have personally made are not being documented for posterity. This new Nietzsche Lessons series is a special zone for total freedom of musical expression.

All of the artwork is going to be my own photography from my life/travels.

UIQ label head and Hyperdub affiliate, Lee Gamble, is renowned for his unpredictable, yet consistently danceable DJ sets which promise to take listeners on a rapid-fire journey through genre and tempo.

His contribution to our Crack Mix series does not stray from this expectation. The forward-thinking experimental club mix closely aligns with his album triptych, 'Flush Real Pharynx 2019-2021', which offers a sonic exploration of contemporary urban overstimulation. If stimulation is the theme, then Gamble’s mix certainly adheres to it.

Después de escuchar el sonido de Roberto Surace por primera vez, obtienes la repentina percepción de su intuición y autenticidad musical. Es tan inmediato y real que a veces se hace palpable. Es el resultado de la mente de un artista joven. Roberto Surace nació en Roma en 1991 y creció en Calabria. Su primer encuentro con la música underground y electrónica se remonta a 2010, poco tiempo antes de convertirse en residente en Vanilla Disco en Siena, donde tenía lugar su fiesta “CaramelloClubPrive” hasta 2017. Ha estremecido a algunos de los clubes más populares de Italia y Europa, como Pacha y Bora Bora en Ibiza, Tenax y Otel en Florencia, Shoreditch Platform en Londres, City Hall y Café del Mar Lounge en Barcelona. En 2013, siente que ha llegado el momento de pasar a la producción de estudio y comenzar a crear el sonido que incorpora su idea de la música, con un tono fresco y ordenado y cuyas rítmicas son fascinantes y bien articuladas. Es en 2017 cuando su canción “Vibe” se incluye en “Various Artists”, lanzada por Riva Starr bajo el sello Snatch Records. Luego se incluye en “Music On Billboard Playlist” 2017 por Dj Marco Carola, más tarde ese mismo año. 2018 es el año de dos logros principales: “Fuck Down”es lanzado por “Elrow Music” ;Roberto firma por uno de los sellos más importantes y productivos que operan en la música house, el Superfett alemán. Aquí es donde lanza “come on everybody”, que durante mucho tiempo contó con el support de Carl Cox. En 2019, “Bloom” sale en Ibiza Talent y se hace un nombre en el mercado, lo que también fue posible gracias al fuerte apoyo del dúo The Martinez Brothers. La evolución creativa en su producción, la mejora constante mediante una investigación meticulosa y la selección de muestras y un uso muy acertado de las voces, son la base de su trabajo. Sin embargo, el papel principal lo desempeña la percusión junto con una línea de bajo cálida y profunda. Un estilo reconocible que se alterna con ritmos y melodías más estructurados donde destacan las notas complejas. Escuchándolo, se puede comprender la precisión y la dedicación que marcan el trabajo de Roberto Surace. En febrero de 2019, impulsado por la necesidad de formar su propio sello, creó SURA Music, que muy pronto recibirá el apoyo de artistas tan populares como Marco Carola, Loco Dice, Joseph Capriati, The Martinez Brothers, Jamie Jones, BLONDISH, Joey Daniel, Neverdogs, Anna Tur y más. Cenk Akyol - Nietzsche Lessons #005

Top class gentleman, DJ and Distant Worlds label owner from South London - Paul Rimbaud - has joined the philosophical ride, enticing us into his inner sanctum with an expressive mix of 90's vibes rave & breaks action. The "matchball" he refers to below is to get a mix onto my new Nietzsche Lessons series, Avenue Red and Avenue Red 1210 - the only man in the known universe to do so, so far. And he's smashed this one 5-0. Invisible mixing, totally seamless. Get your raving boots on. Reach for the lasers. Safe as fuck!

Paul Rimbaud wrote: "God is dead" spoke Nietzsche but somewhat negated the power of the declaration when he went and died himself, thus allowing God to declare "Nietzsche is dead". At least he would have if Nietzsche hadn't already done him dirty. Anyways turns out that the only positive maxim we can lay our faith in these days regards the late 20th century assertion that "hardcore will never die". Accordingly I've engaged in a Hegelian dialectic on the hardcore continuum in an effort to reach some degree of polyrhythmic synthesis; old stuff, new stuff, all sharing a common denominator - the breakbeat. 

To be quite honest, being a miserable sod, I always related more to Schopenhauer personally but I think we can all at least agree that there has never been a party that hasn't been livened up by debating long-dead German existentialists. In a direct affront to nihilism I am proud to collect the Pritchard match ball with this mix so may I implore all the listeners to let inspiration be your ecstasy and ecstasy, your inspiration.

Just a lil' bit of loosey-goosey wicki-wicki wahhh-wahhh on the trusty Technics SL-1210MK5 1's & 2's. This was done expressly in order to hear some nice music songs back to myself... music songs which are in my collection of vinyl records because I had bought each of them at various times in the past. Having pressed the record button on my trusty high resolution audio recorder device before I started playing them, I had in the end precipitated the existence of a recording of about 2 hours in duration. That being because that was how long I was playing them for. Having heard back the vibes in this witches brew, I decided to upload it for me and for you.

One of several sets I played at the awesome Bar 25th in Belgrade, Serbia 🇷🇸, an underground music bar/club that sits on the right bank of the Sava River at the confluence point with the Danube River. This one was recorded outside by the river bank for sunset. I later played a set inside the club but it was not recorded.

Music collector, DJ and occasional artist/producer. DJ'ing since 1997, I play a wide range of music that is mainly focused on the deeper/dubbier shades of house, techno & electro. I also love all kinds of eclectic stuff including disco, boogie, Italo, synth pop, nu jazz, jazzdance, lounge, trip-hop, downtempo, dub, reggae, jungle, liquid drum & bass, IDM, electronica, Warp, Ninja Tune etc.

In summer 2013 I set up the Avenue Red (@avenue-red) imprint to push quality material from a wide plethora of DJs and artists who I have particular respect for in terms of their musical output, artistry and dedication to the cause.
