Advice for the DJs, producers and artists of our community: Accept no limitations others may place on you. Glass ceilings are made to be broken. If you can see it, you can be it. If you can dream it, you can scheme it. Seek like minds but don’t be afraid to color outside the lines. Somewhere between familiarity and the edge of your artistic comfort zone is where innovation comes from. Going beyond your comfort zone may take you into new directions you hadn’t considered or at least taught you something new.

This conversation between Shivangi Mariam Raj and Steven Salaita reflects over Palestine by examining how settler colonial logics are coded within language — ranging from the limits of human rights framework to conditional solidarities, from visual grammars of sanitized victimhood to academic censorship, and more. We also discuss the defiant vocabulary of resistance, as embodied by Palestinian armed rebels, prisoners, and scholars. 

Steven Salaita is a Palestinian scholar and public speaker based in the U.S. He has previously taught at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Virginia Tech. This track played after the after the glossary was read over the microphone during in the sound performance Laboratory(Mars) which happened on February 28th, 2023 a day after the annual celebration of Dominican Independence Day. The performance was made up of five distinct sound moments and Dedicated to Lake Michigan marks the moment right before the song cover ending. 

This track is composed of original field recordings of underwater sounds using a contact mic, and an improvised vocal exercise by me.
