A New World Begins

In the dusty attic of his grandfather’s old house, Dan, who suffers from insomnia, finds a yellowed parchment in the middle of the night. Part of the old eccentric’s legacy? Long ago, he had roamed dark forests, crossed deserts, and explored inaccessible mountains.

The parchment shows, though only faintly, a location in El Caramar — the legendary place his grandfather had told so many stories about. Without delay, Dan sets out in search of further clues. The route leads across the storm-lashed Horka Sea, inhabited by dark creatures. Upstream, through narrow gorges, he must face the natives who guarded the entrance to El Caramar and the secret it conceals.

This purely orchestral music draws on the clichés of film scores from the 1980s to the 2000s. Instead of a clearly recognizable theme or leitmotif, I tried to express rapidly shifting moods through specific instrumentation.

A gentle melody with harp arpeggios immediately transitions into a menacing rhythmic section with chromatic harmony, followed by a tension-filled passage with a strong element of aleatoric writing. The now accelerating tempo leads to the main motif but shifts directly into an action-packed part with string staccatos.

The motif is then varied and played at half speed by solo strings, taking on a very sorrowful tone. But then the mood turns serious. Low brass and a string ostinato lead to the climax of the piece, another variation of the theme in which the choir joins in at full volume.

Mala Tempora

Another snippet from Caligo Paean - beware of gifts when chasing gods : ) 

Caligo Paean is a 1 hour long sound piece installed on river front property in the town of Franklin, Tasmania as part of the exhibition "When The Fog Clears". It formed part of the Ten Days on The Island Festival March 2025.
The work was installed in several locations across the property including a stack of subs under an old bus, in the main exhibition space and in an abandoned shed some 40 metres from the main area . The speakers were 'tuned' quite differently depending on their location and the sound was not delay corrected with the result of each mini-installation merging with each other in odd sonic ways - kind of calling the listener from one spot to another. The the work features field recordings, percussion, piano, bass guitar and Intonarumori as well as this special one off choir : )

Caligo is the Ancient goddess of Chaos. Born of the fog she controls the darkness, dwells in the void and is as old as the primordial matter that created the universe. This work is a tribute to the goddess as she continues to influence our lives and, in the case of this installation, the site and concept informing the show.

Every day, the mists of the Huon Valley perform a seductive dance, gently obscuring and revealing contours of the fertile land and waters. Situated in The Watershed Franklin, When The Fog Clears features six artists from lutruwita / Tasmania exploring the region’s iconic mists through a variety of mediums including installation, sculpture, illustration, sound, and video.

Developed exclusively for Franklin, this exhibit extends from the waterfront itself into the chambers, kilns, and rafters of the shed, inviting visitors to consider fog as an atmosphere that can cloak us in unexpected ways.



Caligo Paean (A gift, a choice)

Patrice5 (@patrice55) and I now present the 2nd track in our new collaborative concept album in progress, "Altitude". Patrice5 composed, mixed and recorded his part on 26 September 2025 in MAGIX, and I composed, mixed and recorded my part in GarageBand iOS and Logic Pro in the evening of 27 September 2025. That same late evening, I also combined our two parts, arranged, mixed and recorded this collaborative track, and we release it today here on SoundCloud, in the evening (in Europe) of 4 October 2025.

The artwork cover for our album "Altitude" (2025) and all tracks in it uses a photo shot by Alex M on 26 September 2025 cropped and annotated by Alex M in Mac OS Preview on 29 September 2025 - in coordination and agreement with Patrice5.

Altitude II - Patrice5 & Alex M

I have always admired music, of diverse styles. Like most of us, I have tried learning to play a few instruments at a basic level in my teenage. But it is only now, in the 21st century, that modern software allows anyone to fool around being the composer, the designer of a whole composition, simpler or more complex, organising together the parts of the various instruments - and to hear the results of this experimentation or inspiration instantly! That is how I have recently begun enjoying the distraction of attempts at composing during my leisure, discovering an amazing dimension of life, and art, perhaps the most intangible, heightening and hypnotising one, and the closest to the soul... (21 August 2017) ... Forgot to mention: music is for sharing - that's why we are all here! (4 September 2017)
