This piece intends to evoke an image of a mother soothing her child to sleep at night. My main focus for this piece was the slow harmonic movement beneath and amongst the spread figures to reflect the journey through the different states of sleep, rising and falling through varying dynamies and textures to reflect moments of lucidity, whilst also gradually forming and fragmenting the rocking melody of a distant lullaby that draws inspiration from the melodic shape of a cançó de bressol (lullaby) from the Valencian town of Llíria - a song I distinctly remember hearing in my childhood.

The compositional output of Alexandra Chen (BMus 2021) is largely inspired by her experiences with nature and her British-Spanish-Chinese identity. With the piano as her primary instrument, she emulates techniques associated with it through varied arrangements and styles.
