«Strange dreams» was composed for C Barré ensemble in frames of Composers Lab of «reMusik.org» festival. This piece explores transition between conditions of being awake and falling asleep. I tried to recreate some thoughts and images emerging at this moment, which are extremely chaotic and elusive. Rhythmic structure is inspired by Myoclonus phenomenon – irregular twitching of muscles when person is falling asleep. This element creates ostinato background for brief phrases and passages, which improvisatory nature reflects the main idea of irrationality and unpredictability of this boundary state of our consciousness.

Strange dreams (ensemble, 2021)

Chronoclasm - in science fiction is one of the possible consequences of travels in time. As a result of meeting people from different eras, ideas and information are transferred from the future to the past. This causes some events and actions in the past, but all their consequences are already reflected in the future. Thus, the reality does not change, all the rings of chronoclasms ever created are already included in the course of history. On the contrary, the abolition of one of the chronoclasms will lead to a change in the future.
In this piece the idea of “broken time” is reflected in “broken” musical continuum and “broken sound”, since some of musical instruments are detuned.
The piece “Chronoclasm II” was written especially for the ensemble “C Barre” and was premiered at the festival on May 31, 2021.

Скрозь мои сахарные усты быстрая речка охъ протекла
Through my sugar lips a fast creek is flowing

Скрозь мои прослышнаи ушки чёрная змейка охъ проползла
Through my ears a black snake crawled

Ты слетай, белая лебёдка, на родиму охъ сторону
Fly to the native side, white winch

Не скажи, белая лебёдка, что я молод охъ запропал
Don’t tell them that I was lost

А скажи, белая да лебёдка, что я молод охъ женился
But tell that I married

On The Blue Sea (2023)

Apophis is a 0.230-mile-diameter asteroid discovered in 2004. Its orbit is characterized by close approaches to our planet which caused a period of concern about possible collision with Earth and the following global disaster. In this regard, the asteroid was named after the ancient Egyptian deity who embodied chaos. Apep (Apophis in Greek) appears in art as a giant serpent who tries to swallow the sun during its nightly journey through the underworld but each time he is defeated by the sun-god Ra. This catchy name was the main reason why observations of this asteroid (which in fact is only 6th on various risk tables) got a noticeable resonance in mass media and generated a lot of rumors. Though according to recent research the possibility of collision with Apophis in 2029 or 2036 is excluded, there is still some small chance of this happening in 2068 or later.

Apophis (ensemble, 2019)

VV Cephei is an eclipsing binary star system located in the constellation Cepheus. The supergiant primary of this system (VV Cephei A) is one of the largest known stars, with approximate size varying from 1050 to 1900 solar radii. The fact that VV Cephei A fills its Roche lobe causes the flowing of matter from star to companion VV Cephei B. It probably makes the space around the system one of the deadliest places we could imagine. However, if there was the smallest probability to survive on a hypothetical planet revolving around VV Cephei, it would be possible to watch one of the most spectacular sunrises in the Universe. “VV Cephei” was composed in 2019 as a part of the “Hammer & Nail” collaboration between band and composition departments of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music; represents an attempt to create a musical image of this stunning event that we are unlikely to ever see.

The piece was premiered on 12 November 2019 at concert Sacra et Profana by IU Concert Band and Jason Nam, its conductor and Assistant Professor in JSoM.

ERE [ 11 string arrangement ] (2017)

Alexey Logunov was born in Leningrad, Russia. He graduated in 2014 from Saint-Petersburg State Conservatory of Rymsky-Korsakov, where he studied composition with Vladimir Tsitovich and Gennady Banshchikov and was later assistant to Sergei Slonimsky. Logunov studied piano performance at Saint Petersburg Conservatory, mentored by Ekaterina Murina from 2016 to 2018. In 2020, he earned a Master of Music degree in Composition from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he studied with P. Q. Phan, Eugene O’Brien, and Tansy Davies. Logunov is now a doctoral student and associate instructor of composition at the Jacobs School.

Logunov’s compositions have been performed at numerous festivals in Russia and internationally, including From Avantgarde to Present Days, Children’s Earth, Sound Ways, reMusik.org, Musica Futura (Minsk, Republic of Belarus), New music-new reality (Ekaterinburg), Composer 2.0 (Yaroslavl) and the Midwest Composers Symposium 2019 (Indiana University, USA), Performing Media Festival 2024 (South Bend, Indiana) and SEAMUS@40 (Louisiana State University, USA). He collaborated with artistic groups “Musica Futura” and “Dialectic of Sound” from 2010 to 2011. In 2016, he participated in the “Roche Continents” program in Salzburg, Austria. The following year, he joined a concert tour of France’s Atlantic coastal cities as part of the Dinard Réunit les Jeunes Virtuoses festival. He was respectively a scholar of and a student of the X and XI International Young Composers Academy in Tchaikovsky-city and a participant of 2023 Splice Institute (Kalamazoo, Michigan).
