Over 74 minutes of scorching keepers from Lonnie Mack’s celebrated Alligator years.  Modern rock’s first true guitar hero, Lonnie burst onto the national scene in 1963 with his groundbreaking single, Memphis.  With his lightning-fast picking, soaring solos, wild whammy bar and huge, rough-hewn voice, his recordings (including the original Wham!) were venerated by a whole generation of string-benders.  They had a huge influence on his #1 disciple, the young Stevie Ray Vaughan, who produced and played on Lonnie’s Alligator comeback album, Strike Like Lightning.  This Best Of features six tracks from that record, plus three from the follow-up, Second Sight, and six from his thunderous live release Live-Attack Of The Killer V.

Regular VT heads will have already noticed we’ve been big fans of Body/Head, the annilihatory guitar rock/haunting vocal duo of Kim Gordon and Bill Nace, since the first time we heard them on the fantastic Fever compilation on Ultra Eczema. We were immediately hungry for more and their subsequent releases on Ultra Eczema, Feeding Tube Records (a collaboration with one of our other favourite projects, Michael Morley of The Dead C’s Gate) and on Nace’s own Open Mouth imprint have consistently blown us away. To satisfy our need for more Body/Head the group have graciously shared a couple of unreleased tracks that “may or may not” appear on a future release and even then they might not appear in this form. These tracks continue the string-burn and F/X-saturated vocal style we love. We always dreamed of a Rudolph Grey/Amy Sheffer duo but Kim & Bill have exceeded our expectations w/their continuing phenomenal form. Crank up the heat! Since its inception, Alligator has always kept a close eye both on new artists and new technologies. In the 1970s, the company produced LPs, cassettes and 8-track tapes. In the 1980s, Alligator was the first blues company to produce CDs, and in the 1990s Alligator was among the first labels to market its catalog over the Internet. These days, alligator.com, the label's website, and its social media sites are instantly updated with the latest news and tour dates. At the website, visitors can listen to a 250-song jukebox while reading bios of every artist, get free downloads and purchase CDs and other blues-related merchandise. Alligator is also deeply involved in the downloading worlds, working closely with almost all of the legitimate download services, making thousands of Alligator tracks available for instant online purchase.

Today Alligator Records is fueled by the same principles that it first established in 1971. The label continues to push forward, still bucking the odds, with everybody working long hours on a shoestring budget.
