Haiku #142: One note of the shakuhachi / resounds endlessly / piercing the winter clouds

This week's Naviar Haiku is by Sôen Nakagawa: 
One note of the Shakuhachi / resounds endlessly / piercing the winter clouds

This is single a live take on the modular synth.   I tried to get a breathy, flute-like sound, which I then ran through Strymon BigSky with none of the dry signal mixed in. I also ran this through Clouds, to sample and pitch-shift the notes, and ultimately to hold the sound endlessly at the finish of the track. The main repeated ostinato is several sine waves which are delicately frequency modulating each other, with an envelope that gradually changes from percussive to sustained and back. Bass is a simple Dark Energy patch, and the higher sequence is an 11-note sequence that has extra notes added occasionally, and the envelope on the voice picks out a more regular pattern so that the '11-ness' is not so apparent.

The haiku of the week was written by Sôen Nakagawa, a key figure in the transmission of Zen Buddhism from Japan to the Western world.
