Always loved this classic, I was re-introduced to this song via Grand Theft Auto and it got stuck in my brain. The original is great but I thought I could do a better sounding version if I found the original samples.

MC Lyte - Cha Cha Cha (LNW Redux)

Based on one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite Funk groups. Kool & The Gang were a completely different group in the early 70s than they were in the 80s. A Horn heavy, breakbeat laden, Jazz Funk Soul outfit.  Their track "N.T." is probably the closest they came to a wandering, jam band type song, with the entire horn section getting a chance to breathe. With the kicker being the heavily sampled drum break that appears towards the song's end. Dilla flipped this break lovely on Q-Tip's "Breathe and Stop" and this remix cribs a bit from his version and peppers in a healthy dose of those boombastic K&G horns. Enjoy!

TREW is a multi-faceted creative. With a love for DJing that began in grade school when using two tape decks to spin basement parties, TREW’s main aim is to weave a common thread through seemingly disparate genres. Drawing inspiration from the early 1980s NYC art/music world, he believes no genre is off limits, no collaboration too outlandish. Honing his chops East Cost Rave & Hip-Hop scenes (Baltimore/DC), it was Chicago’s wealth of musical and architectural history that pulled him westward. “Like most kids back then, I thought ‘Percolator’ was a Baltimore Club track. Once I found out the truth I knew this is where I was meant to be!” he exclaims. Soon after, he quit his corporate job, cashed in the 401k, and invested his life into music.

While not DJing he co-owns Ground Lift Media - a digital marketing company, is 1/2 of the DJ/Production duo Altered Tapes, owns and operates Heat Rock Records, and is deep into vinyl excavation having amassed thousands of rare Soul, Funk, Disco, & Jazz records. A hobby/obsession he shares with the world via his Miyagi Records Shop.

Next up in the series is a Chicago Stepper-influenced remix of Jay-Z's "Can't Knock the Hustle." 

I've spent the Summer immersed in vinyl, getting the Miyagi Records project off the ground. And along the way I've discovered or have been put up on, a ton of music! This remix is based on The Stylistics quiet storm killer "Hurry Up This Way Again" which you'll recognize as sampled on Jay-Z's "Politics As Usual." I'd heard the Stylistics song waaay back in the day but didn't put 2 and 2 together. The homie Twelve Gage came through the shop awhile back and reintroduced me to this gem and I had it on repeat for days afterward. It didn't take long for the remix idea to come about. All I really wanted was to make a Stepper out of Jigga and continue my "Reasonable Saturday Night" series somehow. Comes with the instrumental which kinda works on it's own as a Stylistics flip. 

On a more personal note, this remix isn't just a clever mashup of song titles but it's more so what my 2020 mindset has become. Losing all DJ gigs, performance work, and my marketing company due to the pandemic made me reassess what I want from life and how I plan to get there. I have a tendency to move too fast, and this year has been a blessing in disguise. A much needed slow down, in order to get some bigger moves in play. I'm sure everyone has their thoughts about Jay-Z but there's no denying his success, and the scope and longevity of that success. I once heard for "Reasonable Doubt" he used his advance to purchase copies of the record so as to give SoundScan numbers a bump, thus securing a better deal on his next album. Whether that's myth or reality, it's a G move and the perfect example of investing and reinvesting in yourself.
