Crimson Desert, much like Underworld, has come out of a vivid musical expression of imagery. Inspired by the surrealist/fantasy aesthetics of a desert world (in fact, loosely based off the aesthetics of Frank Herbert's Dune), Crimson Desert brings downtempo electronica conventions to a spacious, desolate soundscape of windy, gritty textures, soft, scintillating, yet tense and simmering synths, and organically evolving percussion grooves. Caught between the scattered spectrum of a red sunset and the endless void of shade, the piece evokes a journey through the endless sea of red sand.

This piece was written for two purposes – as an immersive soundtrack for a friend's virtual reality assignment, and as a submission for my end-of-semester third-year composition assignment.

My friend's project was a short VR game in which the player is shipwrecked on an isolated island in the middle of a storm. They are tasked with rebuilding the ship using resources on the island, before setting sail once more. While composing the score, I sought to convey the ebb and flow of a raging storm, as well as the emotional journey that the game takes the player through. Note that the piece is designed to loop back to the start, should the player decide to stay longer on the island.

Inspired in part by legendary film soundtracks such as Howard Shore's Lord of the Rings, John Powell's How to Train Your Dragon and Joe Hisaishi's Studio Ghibli scores (to name a few), "We Yearn to Tell Stories" is a musical reflection on our innate need for storytelling as humans. It seeks to explore the thrill of building worlds, characters and narratives. It also portrays the ebbs and flows of the creative process, before finally capturing the joy and elation that results from witnessing a brand new story finally come alive.
