The phrase "liminal in hospital turquoise and blood mask" arrived in my brain early one morning as a hypnagogic hallucination, inspiring me to dig through my dream journals and explore some of the more interesting entries -

Lucid dreams, vivid and visceral and textural.

Spacial and temporal inconsistencies, often considered normal in the context of dreams.

Ghosts from the past that continue to haunt, many years after their real counterparts have exited my life.

Feelings of loss and grief on scales I've never experienced in waking life.

After spending too long believing I didn't have the skillset to put these thoughts and feelings to music, it is done. Hopefully everything has been reflected and is felt.

The invisible hand grasps the spring of life in the earth, slowly and heavily twisting half a circle, the huge machine called nature turns its gears, meshing and twisting one gear.

Mountain springs and waterfalls flow, and birds and insects sing in the sky. Then the sun rises and the moon sets, and a day flashes by in an instant. Air flow, changes, and echoes from afar - before I open my eyes again to see the world, I have clearly felt the brightness.

Be quiet, think, and then listen to the rhythm of the pulse.

“The Smog Broker”

As more and more of the Earth becomes desolated and withered in the face of rapid industrialization, humanity sought out more ways to generate energy and discovered a way to reuse the recently deceased using Second Pandora magic. These Smog Brokers are reanimated corpses retrofitted to generate energy from their decomposition, and the process creates approximately ten times more pollution than the second most polluting energy source.

They are commonly seen wandering wastelands and massive factory compounds, remotely generating energy for massive corporations. They have no need to sustain themselves and can wander just about anywhere on Earth, something that is actually quite a danger. The sheer amount of unbreathable air one spews can render an entire area uninhabitable for any life should the Smog Broker reside there too long.

Eventually, as is body rots, it stops producing energy and fully decays. This leaves behind an excess of discarded machinery and disgusting, moldy flesh sludge, a substance that is incredibly difficult to clean up. Smog Brokers have a six to eight-month-long lifespan before succumbing to degradation, and in that time, can create enough pollution to kill an entire forest.

While there have been attempts by some to sequester these beings, the corporations that create them have done nothing to stop them from invading natural areas and ruining them. It is difficult to estimate how much of the Earth has been rendered uninhabitable by Smog Brokers, but we suspect it could rise to as much as 45% of the planet someday if left unattended.

“Second Hand Smoke” is one of the most oppressively dark tracks I’ve ever made, a feeling accentuated by the suffocating, gritty basswork. No part of the song lets up in its feeling of malaise… hell, even the lightest moments feel like a desolate wasteland of dust. Before long, you’re thrown right back into mechanical drums, wheezing steam, and uncomfortably close sounds of strained breathing. The seeping basslines are intertwined with jittery flows, encompassing the unfeeling malice of the factory.
