Wavering Forms 47 -  Horn of Plenty

In December 2021, I was invited to Extra Muros - a residency organized by the great Flee Project label and the MEG - Musée d'ethnographie de Genève and their ethnomusicology department.

The first week was dedicated to research and me and the other residency attendees got the absolutely wonderful opportunity to dwell into the museum archive - one of the biggest collections of music in the world.

There, I got the chance to submerge myself into music from places like Romania, Occitania, Scandinavia, France, Georgia, the Swiss Alps, Albania, Anatolia, Palestine, and further away places such as Nuristan, Laos, Cambodia and Indonesia, just to name a few. I listened through music for theaters, field recordings, ritual and liturgical music, choirs, lullabies and herder’s songs, played on folk and traditional instruments such as bag pipes, cattle horns, jaw harps, leaves(!) and various string instruments. It was an absolutely life changing experience for many reasons. This mix is my ambition to try and encapsulate that week.

Slavic folk, ambient psychedelia, 20th century minimalism and vocal experiments - Polish band Księżyc floats somewhere between, happily resisting simple genre categorization. The surreal and haunting beauty of their music is amplified by the fairy tale inspired lyrics Remek Hanaj has created.

For this episode, Remek has curated an hour of Eastern European 
avant-folk. It displays some of the creative diversity of the region and its relationship with blending traditional and contemporary ideas.

It is so interesting that periods suddenly come in life that seem to completely format the space around, charging it with sparks of a much needed, sometimes scorching experience...It's what happened with me...

I live in a small, lost on maps town, called OM, surrounded by the sea on one side and vast forests, pierced like a circulatory system by the veins of rivers on the other...Someone says that OM exists, while others have never even heard of such a place...Imagine, there is such a story that somewhere 50 years ago, in newspapers you can find articles proving the non-existence of this city, and then, apparently, the same wise men refuted these strange theories...

Everything in my life was moving in a measured way, following the vector of an illusory game of stability imposed from childhood...It's absurd in a constantly changing world, but everything looks so serious...It felt like a wall was built around this place, hiding the flow of time of the surrounding world, isolating us from ourselves... This contributed to one degree or another to the acquired indifference to many manifestations of human qualities that are inherent in the original embodiment of our species...But, to my pleasure, the space around me moved against my tyrannical expectations, constancy and non-interference in life...And, you know,  it definitely had more plans for me...

I vaguely remember exactly when, but at some point, thanks to the results of this external movement, I was able to see things as they are, observing everything from the outside, without interfering with the processes...It's as if every time you take a step into the abyss, in an attempt to find out what is there - in the dark matter of this eternal radiance?

All these transformations undoubtedly caused waves of protest and a desire to escape to my shelter - a huge Fossil...It is likely that for many millions of years it has been hiding from outsiders, but opens up to those who are ready to dissolve in musical form, in poetry supported by the voices of instruments...There, an understanding comes to me that rhythms are cyclical, like ebb and flow, and compositions, with proper immersion in them, no longer contain sharpness and do not allow the listener to be taken by surprise...You can also say that all this is the result of the desire to put the clocks on the dial down...

Reading Pessoa is like looking into a mirror made of words, gazing into the most intimate corners of your soul with the eyes of a stranger. He reaches with delicacy what I consider to be the highest form of literature: the sincere expression of all those emotions and sensations that each one of us have participated in just by the sake of being human, from a sleepless night to the wonder of what’s the meaning of life. 

He casts a light on the darkness of our understanding, for, as he says: 'The entire life of the human soul is mere motions in the shadows. We live in a twilight of consciousness, never in accord with whom we are or think we are. We all have our vanity, and that vanity is our way of forgetting that there are other people with a soul like our own. //  There is an equal, abstract destiny for men and for things; both have an equally indifferent designation in the algebra of the world’s mystery. //  We never know self-realization. We are two abysses – a well staring at the sky.'
