Just in time for Halloween, Wah Wah 45s unleash a splendidly spooky seven incher from Brighton’s very own Lee “Scratch” Perry, the one and only Richie Phoe. His take on the Jacko classic is a brutally bass worrying dance floor dub delight, complete with sinister sound effects and cackles galore! On the flip, Richie gives Leon Haywood’s much sampled classic, “I Want’a Do Something Freaky To You” the deathly dub treatment too – look out for those pertifying piano licks!

Hailing from Brighton, UK, Richie Phoe's trademark reggae productions have garnered attention from tastemakers and DJs alike. In addition to accolades from Rob Da Banks' Sunday Best Recordings, Richie was personally commissioned by Rob to remix Max Sedgley's Celebrity. A Jon Kennedy remix for Grand Central soon followed, and yet more support would come as Sinful was included in the esteemed Rob Da Bank and Chris Coco “Listen Again” compilation.

In 2008 Richie released the critically lauded “Eye on the Prize EP”, featuring UK Reggae legend Tippa Irie, which gained BBC radio play from Huw Stephens, Mark Lammar, Rob Da Bank and an interview on Steve Lamacq's Radio 2 show..

Richie's first forays into the world of music production began on his Amiga 500, back in the early '90s; by 1999 he'd progressed to an MPC 2000 and began making his own beats, inspired by the likes of De La Soul and D.I.T.C. As his style progressed he started collecting reggae vinyl and began DJing at reggae and hip-hop nights weekly in clubs and bars in Portsmouth. Bringing deep and positive vibes to the dance floor, and more recently working with Wah Wah 45s’ very own Resonators, Richie has earned the aforementioned title of “Brighton's Lee Scratch Perry”.

The Gene Dudley Group represents an outpouring of deep soul and funk music from obscenely talented 27 year-old multi-instrumentalist residing in North London, Gene Dudley.  

The debut album, “Saturday Shifting”, released earlier this year, caused quite a stir and quickly gained this deeply soulful producer a new army of fans, with Kenny Dope, Huey Morgan and Daz-I-Kue all singing its praises! 

One of the most popular tracks from the album is the up-tempo, tropical flavoured cut, and brand new single, “The Hilo Bay Halfway”. It comes complete with a pair of exclusive remixes – a “Disco Dub Remix” from Gene himself, who uses hand claps, synths and some seriously squelchy bass to take this club monster in another, equally foot friendly direction; and one from label mate Scrimshire, whose afro flavoured guitar licks and quirky keyboard sounds guarantee similar dance floor destruction.

Add to that a brand new song from Gene Dudley, entitled “The Mall Walk”, and the added bonus of Gene’s never before released remix of the Scrimshire classic “Alignment”, featuring the sultry vocals of Stac, and you’ve got a package filled to the brim with serious Wah Wah 45s talent!

Look out for The Gene Dudley Group live, when they support Stones Throw artists Myron & E at London’s Jazz Café in December. There’s much more to come from this new star of the deep funk and soul scene.

Each one had a 2012 theme, from the Olympics to Philip Schofield's witch hunt, and of course the end of the world which is supposed to be happening right now as I type. A short expedition into the much overlooked tipica cumbia sound of Panamá

The heartache, melancholy and joy in the Panamá Tipica sound is hard to match and like no other to experience. It comes from a rich background of regional musical traditions, carnival rivalry and hotbeds like the legendary 'Festival en Guarare'. As I understand it, Panamanian cumbia was first played on violin until the arrival of accordions on the Isthmus, most early acordeoneros were violinists first and foremost. This mixtape comprises of some of the best 45s from the Herrera and Los Santos provinces, from the mid 50s through to late 60s. Over the last few years I've had the good fortune to meet several of these wonderful artists. Featured here: Dorindo, Papi Brandao, Oswaldo,Fito Espina, Ulpiano, Ceferino and more... Mixtape: TIPICA Sound

This is a mix of folkloric and outer-regional music of Ethiopia, all 45s, records that I feel need to be heard. Less of breakbeats & wah wah and this time more of krar, claps, howling organs and trad melodies. For fans of previous mixes ‘Axum to Addis’ and ‘Addis Sheckla Explosion’.

This is a selection of a handful of Angolan 45s that have proven their spirit & longevity in my record collection. Here's to the slap-echo guitars, scratchy dikanza, hope, aspiration and musical beauty that flowered from Luanda. This sound has long informed the systems of Barranquilla and parallels cumbia, samba & compas in sonic ancestral synchronicity.
