Bakhtin would have liked Haitian rara bands and street parades. Ok, maybe not. But he would have at least recognized that through all of the dust, the heat, the bodies, the sweat, the noise, the pulsating rhythms, the hypnotic sounds of hocketing bamboo trumpets (literally called vaksin, which means exactly what it sounds like) and metal horns, the often vulgar song lyrics, and the laughter (above all, the laughter), the carnivalesque mockery of power and social norms is in full swing.  

This mixtape features field recordings of rara music (mostly) from the Haitian countryside made by my dear friend Elizabeth McAlister, unless otherwise noted. Recorded by ethnomusicologist Rolf Killius in 2001 in a Sora house, Tame Gorjang village, Orissa. 

The musical structure of the performance is interesting: the lead singer begins the song with the second singer following just seconds behind. This results in an 'echo' effect that seems unique to the Sora, though a similar style is used in forms of both North and South Indian classical music where the accompanist (sarangi or violin for example) follows the singer.

Music from India: Sora ancestor song

Nicholas Allen's audio collection consists of 9 reel to reel tapes, some of which were recorded between 1970 and 1971 (Thulung Rai) and some in 1981 (Kinnaur). The collection has been edited into separate tracks in the complete playlist made available here and includes extended recordings of several different festivals and ceremonies, epic and myth recitals, and examples of several different instruments. In 2017 Dr Allen donated further extensive documentation relating to the Thulung recordings and their content to facilitate future scholarly use of the collection. This documentation in the Related Documents File for the Allen Collection at the Pitt Rivers Museum and consists of:

Moru sanza music by Timon Beri from Lui village in Moru Misa, Eastern Equatoria. Recorded by Patti Langton in South Sudan in 1979. Patti recorded Timon playing five distinct songs, and one of the songs tells of a boy and girl who want to marry, but the mother of the girl doesn't like the boy so he can't marry her. 

The Patti Langton audio collection includes music, interviews and language lessons and is curated by the Pitt Rivers Museum, together more than 1000 fieldwork images and over 100 objects.
