This small work is a recording of my friend Selina. She immigrated from the Tokelau Islands as a young teenager to study nursing & early childhood education here in New Zealand. I am sharing this with you to coincide with the celebration of the Tokelauan Language week here in New Zealand.

Tokelau lies to the North of the Samoan Islands in the Pacific ocean. It has a very rich and special culture that is sea & land based, possessing a deep spiritual bias with the advent of Christianity. It is a culture with story telling steeped in  song and dance.

An interpretation : What is going on in the world at this time is actually inconsequential or "meaningless". We believe that we are in control & own the world but we do not. In effect, Paulo said "what is the use of worldly goods when we lose our souls?" 

We come here with nothing and we go back with nothing.

Kote Lalolagi - Tokelauan Language

It's a long time since poet Karin Tarabochia (Augenmerk) and I proposed to do a collaboration but we have finally got there. Translation was a problem but by listening to, and reading Karin's other works I let myself surrender to the tone in her words and voice. Karin has written the poetry and allowed me to shadow her beautiful words with my interpretation in places. Sometimes it is literal and sometimes I have improvised slightly but always going from the poem Karin sent to me. 

The format is as it was proposed by Karin, her wonderful and sensitive reading followed by my reading. Once both recordings had been done by ourselves it was my job to place a musical context to the readings. I was so in love with the natural voices I wasn't sure about what music to blend with it but as soon as I realised that a previous work I had done felt right I brought it all together.

I am thrilled to work with Karin, and hope you may enjoy our collaboration. Two voices, two poets, and a desire to bridge the language difficulties such a task brings to poetry.

Quite some time ago Jimmy Rivas sent me a splendid, but melancholy soundtrack called Stalingrad and enquired if I could write a poem to it. I spent many a while researching the battle of Stalingrad and trying to get a real feel for what had happened there. The suffering was immense, the losses awful. Jimmy was moved by this and so was I, especially by Jimmy's haunting soundtrack he had composed and given life to. It has taken me a long time to find the right feel and tone for the words, but here it is.

I have been involved with music since early childhood. A family of seven playing together were the beginnings. Percussion, Piano, Singing, 'Cello & Guitar were my training disciplines: Singing always a great passion. As a young Adult I was involved also with theatre, musical theatre, fine arts & sculpture, which led to the creation of numerous ethnic, although original instruments, stringed, blown and beaten. This focus on creation has always given me an intuitive approach to music making. Sound and its deepest listening and what can be done with the new technologies of recording has inspired this work. My piano is extemporaneous now with a highly meditative approach. With an enormous gratitude for the eloquence of Bill Manhire's Poetry as the creative back-bone. Eyes closed and headphones are best.

For diversity and consistency, I am not hesitant in saying my Soundcloud pages house the most inventive creations on here. There are others making fabulous tunes, but no one is more prolific while maintaining a high standard of pole to pole invention, and that applies to the lyrics too. I won't escape obscurity and oblivion, but that proves nothing, the internet is way, way, WAY overcrowded with unsigned music, way too much mediocre stuff, which obscure anything exceptional out there; the wood hidden away behind lots and lots and LOTS of trees, and no one has the time to look for needles in haystacks, to find a diamond in the rough, it's just way too big a task, not humanely possible!

INVENTIVE, AUTHENTIC, DIVERSE MUSIC, INVENTIVE, AUTHENTIC, IMAGINATIVE LYRICS, but those are the last things the vast majority of listeners are looking for these days!

Me, I'm awestruck by musicians who can't be pigeonholed, who don't conform to any borders, who don't think about which direction each new creation will take, they just go wherever that creativity takes them; pure, on the fly, innovation, imperfect but 100% authentic, as far a way from manufactured, recipe book, regurgitation, as it is possible to get, totally unforced, inspirational and way, way, WAY outside the box! There ought to be a place for such creativity, there was at one time, but a mercenary music industry put an end to that, leaving us with a situation where those who deserve the most adoration for the talents receive the least!

Listening to just one of my tunes tells you nothing about my creative approach, listening to ten of my tunes will still tell you very little, listen to a hundred of my tunes and the penny will start to drop, but it's only after hearing 500+ of my creations and collaborations that your eyes will widen in amazement! 
However, if you don't have unlimited eclectic taste none of that applies, and the reality is, who, in this world, is going to listen to every tune I've created, no one--if even one tune is heard from beginning to end it's a minor miracle, because sadly, there is a belief that unsigned means inferior, but I've heard enough tunes by the rest of you guys to know that's a myth, that's bullshit, we create some of the most inventive, authentic, imaginative tunes out there!
Give me unsigned, independent and underground music over signed, safe, predictable, recipe book, music any day of the week!
