During the 70s and 80s, Ivory Coast was the center of the West African music scene, both by the quality of its productions (labels, studio, musicians) and by the attraction it represented for musicians from various horizons (Mali, Guinea, Congo, Ghana, Bénin, Burkina Faso ...). We honor this cultural and musical abundance with some beautiful LP's digged in Abidjan.

From start to finish this album features the most insane Jazz-Funk tunes ever released on a Library LP from Italy. Amleto Armando aka 'Puccio' Roelens was a great and requested composer and arranger of the time, been working for Rai and Vedette Records and being also and orchestra leader and pianist. Along with "ROCK SATELLITE" this a KILLER Funk record all the way through, and the most similar record to mythical Torossi's FEELINGS. Incredible B-boy drum breaks in this session with spacey Fender Rhodes, cosmic Synth, mad Fuzz and treated Wha-Wha, heavy basslines, and huge horns section where Dino Piana Jazz trombone seems to play and so on..

Top Italian groovy Jazz and mental album, easily a grail of the genre featuring some terrific breaks, killer Wah Wah guitar and Funky Hammond job, with a solid backing studio orchestra. Loads of laden stylish grooves with brilliant Modal Jazz numbers, smoothy vibes, and Cool Jazz influences with also different musical themes. Every track is just heaven with several hot club tunes for DJs. Solid masterpiece!

Upon popular request, TDR presents the instrumentals and re-edits of Tensei's uplifting 'Constellate' release. 

Tensei (meaning "Heaven Star" in Japanese) is the Chicago based producer tandem of Midas Wells and Chris Kramer. The music represents a soulful, electronic and hip hop infused perspective to Chicago's growing spiritual jazz movement, with many of the movement's protagonists such as Makaya McCraven, Brandee Younger, Greg Spero, Junius Paul, Khari Lemuel, Kevin Mitchell and Paul Curtis joining the recording sessions for the album.

It's been a long, winding road to Hailu Mergia's sixth decade of musical activity. From a young musician in the 60s starting out in Addis Ababa to the 70s golden age of dance bands to the new hope as an emigre in America to the drier period of the 90s and 2000s when he mainly played keyboard in his taxi while waiting in the airport queue or at home with friends. More recently, with the reissue of his classic works and a re-assessment of his role in Ethiopian music history, Mergia has played to audiences big and small in some of the most cherished venues around the world. With his 2018 critical breakthrough "Lala Belu" Mergia consolidated his legacy, producing the album on his own and connecting with listeners through his vision of modern Ethiopian music. Extensive touring after the record revealed an artist who is in no way stuck in the nostalgia for the “golden age” sound. The press agreed, including the New York Times, BBC and Pitchfork, calling his music “triumphantly in the present” in its Best 200 Albums of the 2010's list. 

Mergia's new album "Yene Mircha" ("My Choice" in Amharic) encapsulates many of the things that make the keyboardist, accordionist and composer-arranger remarkable—elements that have persisted to maintain his vitality all these years, through the ebb and flow of his career. The rock solid trio with whom he has toured the world most recently, DC-based Alemseged Kebede (bass) and Ken Joseph (drums), forms the nucleus around which an expanded band makes a potent response to the contemporary jazz future "Lala Belu" promised. "Yene Mircha" calcifies Mergia's prolific stream of creativity and his philosophy that there is a multitude of Ethiopian musical approaches, not just one sound. 

Enlisting the help of master mesenqo (traditional stringed instrument) player Setegn Atenaw, celebrated vocalist Tsehay Kassa and legendary saxophone player Moges Habte from his 70s outfit Walias Band, Mergia enhances his bright, electric band on this recording with an expanded line up on some songs. Mergia produced the album which features several of his original compositions along with songs by Asnakesh Worku and Teddy Afro. An artist still reinventing his sound every night on stage during his marathon live sets, this 74-year-old icon refuses to make the same album twice. His creative process in the studio—starting with the core band, then after listening extensively over weeks and months adding more sounds and instruments—is as urgent and risky as his concerts can be, pushing the band to the outer limits of group improvisation and back with chord extensions during his exploratory solos. "Yene Mircha" captures this live experience and fosters an expansive view of what else could be in store for this tireless practitioner of Ethiopian music.

London band The Fantastics! return to BBE Music with instrumental jazz-dance masterpiece ‘Pyramid’, the second single to be taken from their forthcoming album ‘Take A Shot’.

‘Pyramid’ was born fully formed in the musical mind of the groups’ saxophonist & flautist Mark Norton – an ethereal instrumental that’s 50% contemplative spiritual introspection à la Pharoah Sanders / Coltrane /Airto Moreira, 50% prime Dingwall’s dance-floor fodder.

Organist Greg Boraman conjured up the intriguing ‘Oblique’, which is a fairly curious musical hybrid. If you had ever wondered what a collaboration between 70’s era Charles Earland, Dexter Wansel and Roni Size for a KPM library music album might sound like – here’s your answer! Fender Rhodes, Hammond, flute and spacy synthesizers ride across James Smith’s sterling drum work, and Sulene Flemings’ ghostly wordless background vocals mark this track out as a spacey jazz-funk oddity.

‘Liquor & Poker’ is a homage to 1950’s organ & sax rhythm & blues became a firm favourite in the bands live shows – it’s combination of old school swinging drums, honking tenor, gritty guitar and organ is always a crowd pleaser, but didn’t quite make it onto the bands forthcoming long player ‘Take A Shot’ – so is included here as a bonus throwback slice of the good groove.

MIMS is incredibly excited to premiere "Walato" an irresistible call to dance from Onipa, one of our favourite groups, weaving Senegal grooves with a modern electronic pulse. Featuring Senegalese percussionist, Mamadou Saar and Nubiyan Twist, Golden Mean and LCSM bassist, Luke Wynter. 

"Walato" is the first single from the forthcoming Music Halls compilation, 'Forest Sound Archive', a collection of music recorded in collaboration during lockdown by some of the best musicians, instrumentalists and music producers living and working in the borough of Waltham Forest.  An endeavour supported by the London Borough of Waltham Forest and Arts Council England. 

Earlier this year, more than a dozen musicians found a way to overcome the challenges of lockdown to create collaborative pieces in reaction to their isolation and the pandemic. Diverse local talents contributed, such as singer/songwriter and producer Charles Watson, award winning composer/singer/songwriter Paul Mosley, and violinist Emma Smith of the acclaimed chamber group Elysian Quartet.

Lead single, “Walato”, is born from a collaboration between neighbours Mamadou Sarr and Onipa’s Tom Excell. Hailing from Dakar, Senegal, Mamadou is an exceptionally talented percussionist, and has played for many years with the legendary Baaba Maal. Musician, producer and Onipa and Nubiyan Twist founder Excell, struck up a strong musical connection with Mamadou whilst both playing with Africa Express earlier this year. They are joined by Onipa vocalist K.O.G. and multi-instrumentalist Luke Wynter of Nubiyan Twist, Golden Mean and IG Culture's LCSM.

The compilation is mastered by Grammy-nominated engineer, Frank Merritt, whose magic touch has helped create acclaimed releases for the likes of Bonobo, Quantic, Soundway, Strut and Bixiga 70. Frank lives and works in Waltham Forest and as part of the process gave mastering masterclasses to local Sixth Form students. The whole project is curated and directed by Sam Jones, music producer (Collocutor, Siti Muharam) and artistic director of Waltham Forest’s Music Hall, for whom this compilation is the just the beginning of a significant redevelopment of Waltham Forest’s public space and support for local musical artists.

The full compilation,  released December 18, sheds light on so many different creative paths being carved across Waltham Forest, and is a delight to listen to from beginning to end. Pre-order now and download "Walato" immediately.
