Chaque défi est une invitation à prendre la plume pour écrire une micro-nouvelle, une forme poétique, un dialogue, un poème…  à partir de "sons-prétextes ". Une nouvelle sélection de "sons-prétextes" vous est proposée du 1er au 15 mai : ce sont des "paysages sonores immersifs" signés de Félix Blume, Yulia Glukhova ou Robin Minard, trois artistes primés au concours phonurgia nova.  Dans le son n°2 :  Isabelle Cousteil fait retour sur le premier défi d'écriture, et vous donne quelques conseils pour aborder celui qui vient. N'hésitez pas à l'interroger.

A study in synthesizing the sound of a room full of people clapping -- from "scratch" using:
- A white noise generator
- A resonant low-pass filter
- Two envelope-driven, voltage-controlled amplifiers
- A voltage-controlled panner
- A random voltage generator

The white noise passes through the filter first, to give it a bit of a ringing sound. Then it goes through the first amplifier, which kind of quickly pulses the sound in and out -- think of each pulse as a single pair of hands clapping once. The voltage controlled panner is fed with a random panning position which changes at the same speed as the first envelope, so each individual clap happens in a different stereo position. The second envelope has a sharp attack but a much slower decay. This is the overall volume of the group clapping.

"The sound compositions fire pattern (2007) and frost pattern (2006) describe the extremes of hot and cold. Almost identical in terms of their formal structure, the twin pieces reflect the acoustic impact of the energies unleashed by fire and ice, from the loudest sound event in each case – the eruption of a volcano and the collision of an iceberg – through to cooling or melting in a more moderate temperature range."

"The clock is one of the most important technical developments of humankind. Few other inventions have had such a shaping influence on our everyday life. The clock’s proverbial ticking is deeply ingrained in our consciousness. It marked time for industrialisation and scientific progress, as well as being the first mechanical musical instrument, preparing our rhythmic understanding for the machinelike precision of modern music. In chronostasis, the sound of time becomes audible via the many-voiced ticking of a whole array of antique clocks. The simplest rhythmic information, the pendular motion of a clock mechanism, gives rise to a complex tangle of overlapping patterns and pulses. For a moment, in the ritual of constant repetition, time seems to stand still. (The term ”chronostasis“ refers to a perceptual illusion that causes the second hand of a clock to appear to stand still for a moment. Apparently, when the gaze moves quickly to a clock face, the mind prolongs its perception of that initial moment beyond what is actually seen.)"

Il s’agit du cycle complet d’une journée entière ramenée à une demi-heure, enregistrée dans la péninsule de Crimée au cours d’un voyage solitaire durant l’été 2018.  L’activité sonore des insectes(principalement grillons et cigales) est indexée sur la température ambiante : elle est un marqueur sensoriel de l’environnement et une horloge biologique. Cette pièce a d'abord été conçue pour une installation en octophonie.

Yulia Glukhova (née en 1989) est une artiste sonore basée à Moscou. Son domaine d’intérêt comprend la musique électronique expérimentale, l’art technologique et le Field Recording (l’enregistrement sur le terrain).

Kayapó - The Crying Chieftain Raoni est basé sur des enregistrements réalisés au printemps 2018 dans la forêt tropicale amazonienne et à Brasilia lors des manifestations indigènes Acampamento Terra Livre. Paysages sonores naturels, chants traditionnels et entretiens documentent la destruction environnementale actuelle et la violence ouverte contre les peuples indigènes de l’Amazonie.
Cette création a été remarquée lors des phonurgia nova awards 2019.

Robin Minard est né à Montréal en 1953. Son travail est consacré à la composition électroacoustique et à l’installation sonore. Il est professeur de composition électroacoustique au conservatoire de Weimar (Allemagne).

Dans la série "Aux confins d'une forêt (presque) confinée”, voici le dernier ouï : "Bufo bufo”, issu d'une empreinte sonore relevée vendredi 24 avril par Madlen Herrström (pour le dessin) et moi-même (pour le son) en la forêt de Fontevraud (attestation de sortie obligatoire en poche bien sûr !). Quand les tirs du Camp militaire de Fontevraud cessent de trouer l'atmosphère, nos tympans (et nos coteaux de tuffeau...), quand les aéronefs sont cloués au tarmac et les automobiles au garage, on peut se dire que le confinement a  quelque chose de bon ! Quelques commentaires reçus : Magnifique ! (Christian Zanesi), Extra (François Delalande), Bravo pour votre création musicale, très distrayante et riche d'enseignement. On se prend à rêver d'un monde ralenti où les animaux auraient droit de cité davantage qu'aujourd'hui (Frédéric Potet), Les batraciens m’ont pris dans leur danse. Quelle folie ! (Adrien Privat), Quel concert dans la forêt ! Je me demande comment tu as pu tracer tes sonographies, Madlen, sans trop rire et en sachant où donner du crayon tant les sons se multiplient et se superposent. Vers la 7ème minute, j’ai tout à coup « vu » une foule acclamant les mariés grenouilles et jetant une pluie de riz, image à laquelle s’est aussi vite substituée celle des spermatozoïdes de crapauds fulgurant dans le sous-bois ! Et puis, à la 9ème minute, le grand silence épuisé qui précède la Création (Francette Delaleu)...

Au terme de cette première quinzaine de l'atelier d'écriture, Isabelle Cousteil fait retour sur le premier défi d'écriture auquel vous avez répondu, et lance un deuxième défi pour la période du 1er au 15 mai. "The Karnau Tapes" is a novel by German writer Marcel Beyer. It tells the story of a fanatical sound engineer of the Nazi era who strives to record a map of all possible human utterances and, in his efforts, even doesn't hesitate to experiment with prisoners of concentration camps. His endeavors finally lead him into the Führerbunker where he records the last words of the daughters of Joseph Goebbels. This track is a compilation of sounds I created for the radio play based on Beyer's novel. The "un-musical" score for this radio play consists of the atmospheres of old worn-out tapes and phonograph records, bat sounds, distorted voices and the imagined primal sound of the skull's bone seam.
