What’s making that noise? Whatever it is it can’t be feeling very well
The hum of civilisation at  a thousand decibels
Carrying information that it’s all gone straight to hell

Evo-psychologists and neuro-tick scientists sneak around
In the slums and the back alleys of every town
Looking for brains to devour and people to put down

And all the artists walk around like the ghosts of their dead idols
With stolen clothes and stolen words and stolen lack of ideals
Good artists copy great artists steal but kleptomania is a disease

And the news shows are the new crime drama series
The more violence the more viewers the more money there is
all while investment bankers murder millions sanctioned by grand juries

And we’re all so cynical, all so bored so weary
Must be thermodynamics or inevitable game theory
And postmodernists and new atheists fight it out man you should hear it

And the polygamists are in bed with almost everyone
Strategically gaining influence one orgasm at a time
Knowing that only they can stop this far-gone decline

And the consultant lecturer makes a killing on his method to avoid
The status anxiety society has given him since he was a boy
Just get rich! And enjoy being self employed

Now look at me I’m a wreck am a fool am disaster
A bundle of issues and a discount-rate quantity of hurt
With my M-W complex and nostalgia and longing for her

This is my life

A late-stage rehearsal straight to cassette for reference. Recorded shortly before going into the studio, probably at John Henry rehearsal rooms. This is Mark on guitar, Lee on drums, and myself on piano and organ (the bass was always addressed in the studio once the basic track was down, which is why it doesn't feature here).
It's best to take the 8 minutes out and listen to the end, preferably in headphones, and in a quiet space,
