I met Alice aka https://soundcloud.com/janloup at Chantelouve, a micro-festival in the Alps and one of my favourite annual French gatherings. As the cards predicted, we had an immediate Empress crush and our b2b was floating magic.

Jan Loup is currently on tour in a van with Maquis Son Sistèm (and their soundsystem) playing squats, DIT parties and other underground venues. In Berlin, they visited Cashmere Radio and I interviewed Jan Loup before a b2b on my monthly show Fictions.

I'll play for the party she co-organizes with Le Comité des Fêtes in Toulouse on the 15th of December. If you can't make it, we hope you enjoy our show together!

Welcoming the brilliant London-based, Singapore-born artist SKETCH to the Untitled 909 mix series. 

Resident at local party famfem, SKETCH is no stranger to the London club circuit. Having played at renowned events such as Riposte, Body Movements, Queens Yard Summer Party, Origins and playbody to name a few, SKETCH has quickly become known for her love of industrial-leaning soundscapes and emotive journeys that draws influence from her Malay / Indonesian heritage. Something that she is now learning to do through her own productions and reconnecting with her heritage through her deep research on samples and the traditional instruments and sounds that are used in Malay / Indonesian music. Releasing her debut single 'Khayal' earlier this year, to great acclaim (being named one to watch by DJ Mag), SKETCH says the track was 'mostly inspired by the traditional Javanese dance called Kuda Kepang, a dance ritual by dancers on a two-dimensional horse' and will soon see remixes of the track from some of her friends. With an EP in the works too, we're super excited to see where SKETCH is heading and can't wait to hear more from her productions. 

In the accompanying interview, we chat to SKETCH about early music influences, what her production journey has been like, the experience of reconnecting with her heritage via music, deep diving into the influences behind 'Khayal' and much more.

This collection of songs came about at a time (2016) when my sole piece of gear was a Korg Microkorg, and it – alongside my speakers – lived by my bedroom window.

For nearly all of these tracks, the sole source is that simple, beautiful synth. I would record takes on top of each other, watching as the clouds went by. Rediscovered now, I've put them up as a reminder to myself as well how little you need to make something nice.

blurer is a peripheral study exploring ways to perceive our surroundings beyond any focal point. The poetic text where the winds are coming from, invites contributing artists and musicians to collectively explore a world that has become unfamiliar yet again. Inspired by the moment Alice tumbles into Wonderland, it asks what it means to unlearn, relearn, and navigate within a world anew. Like Alice, this conceptual mixtape delves into places, things, and feelings that have been overlooked, ignored or seen as a backdrop. The text, tracks, and sounds of this compilation take us on an explorative journey—not to arrive somewhere, but to sense that what lies within the blur has always already been in the here:now.

Most music is used as a form of abstract translation. To unblur the personal, we abstract it and transform and transport it through familiar sounds. Through abstraction, the motives are essentialized to their core. In this, minimalism becomes a prioritisation. A blur can be more flexible. The reduction of elements could be optimistic or protective.
What this release does is observe the peripheral, to look for emotionality or personality within it, but also to create atmospheres that appear peripheral, yet are again included in the general blur.
When hearing the sounds of blurer, the focus of the compositions fluctuates and directs the listener’s perception to certain points within, not only to hear what seems essential but also to draw closer attention to the peripheral. Throughout the whole release, the procedures are very different. Some moments are vivid, almost narrative. There are deconstructed references to find, in both energetic and quiet forms. Occasionally, we pass by rearing, foggy drone walls or prancing, twirling, or scurrying melodies carried around, on synths or guitar strings. Blurer seems to harbor atmospheres of comfort in the cold, loops of spiraling memories or expressions of disorientation, that scamper around on the acoustic foundation created by the 19 artists.
