Legends @DJDanMusic and @divaDanielle took the stage just after midnight for a very special b2b set; they kept the party going late into All Hallows Eve. We were so fortunate to play host to such a talented duo.

The Deep Red party has developed into one my favorites on the calendar to play.  It's a small, tight and dark dancefloor on the Upper Floor with a sexy crowd, and thus the music selection is picked to match that moment. 

I'm eager to fit in lots of tracks and not get bogged down in too many long break downs to keep the groove strong, and so it also lends itself to some mixing imperfections, that if I were more anal I would fix or not share.  :-P   This was mostly all new to me music so there was some improvising.  But, I don't mind the raw live feel to show you exactly how it went down, imperfections and all.

My good friend and fellow man of music—Kevin Mills—brought to my attention, yet again, some music from the fabric of our lives that was severely overlooked and under-appreciated. 

The music for the game show The Price Is Right, didn’t just have a catchy theme song—famously remade by Paul Johnson and another version by Crystal Waters called “Come On Down”—the show also featured top-notch music for the interludes, showcase showdowns and many more. 

Absolute classic 1970s Black American Popular Musicianship was on full display on this game show during the Bob Barker days. 

Since Kevin Mills brought this to my attention, I sampled and reworked an interlude from the show and dedicated it to him.

Madonna | Live To Tell (Change Request ReVision)

For this ReVision, I went after a top-three song from this artist and one that is considered the most exceptional ballad she ever wrote. 

"Live to Tell" is the lead single from Madonna's third studio album, 1986's True Blue and It became Madonna's third number-one single in the US, and her second number-one that is featured in a film after "Crazy for You."

Written by Patrick Leonard for the score of the film Fire with Fire, the instrumental was shown to Madonna, who decided to use it for her husband Sean Penn's film At Close Range. She then wrote the lyrics and co-wrote/produced them with Leonard. 

I have always loved this instrumental for its classic 80s instrumentation, synth choices, drum machines, and iconic early digital reverb.

The drum sound on this recording makes use of a recently developed technique at that time of gating the spatial effects returns of the drum tracks. The gate opens and closes quickly giving a nurse of huge transient and attack, but cuts the sustain and removes the decay of the reverb as to make the drums, especially the snare, jump out of the speakers. 

This intentional use of a noise age as a creative device in this manner is a now-standard recording technique called gated-reverb. However, this technique was invented by accident while producer Steve Lillywhite and engineer Hugh Padgham were recording Phil Collins drum tracks on the song "Intruder" off Peter Gabriel's third studio album. 

Collins would go on to make this sound a centerpiece of his work with almost every single hit record he made after this featuring this gated reverb drum sound. 

For this ReVision, I actually for the first time, used parts of the original record, as I want to re-arrange this song for some time now. 

Eventide's SP2016, the Lexicon224, and the EMT250 reverb is THE sound of the era as some of the first rack-mounted studio processors were being introduced. The entire tone of 1980s recordings arts can pretty much be summed up with just these three spatial effects alone. 

I added a relevant rhythm section and drum programming, using these classic reverbs, added many more synthesis layers and harmonic textures, some string melodies, rhythm guitar, and a re-written keyboard part in the section in the bridge with a classic Yamaha DX7.

With another surefire fire hit in the works, Cocoon Recordings demonstrates once again it’s got the stuff that keeps us coming back for more. It’s also no surprise to find out that Apir is actually the alter ego of Tim Green whose decade long relationship with Cocoon Recordings culminated with last year’s acclaimed “Her Future Ghost“ LP. Here, together with New York freshman Justin Marchacos, he continues this rich vein of form. He states: 

“For most of my career I’ve always liked to experiment within different sub genres, but I have released all of my dance music under my own name….. Ultimately I think it was holding me back. Im finding this new approach to be working really well so far and can’t wait for you to hear the forthcoming results from both my Apir & Tim Green projects.”

The Italian writer Italo Calvino described melancholy as “sadness that has taken on lightness”, an idea that perfectly encapsulates the emotional pull and insatiable drive of top notch melodic techno. “Holocene“ by Apir & Justin Marchacos is just that, an electronic soundscape of epic proportions, built for a huge soundsystem and best experienced under cover of a warm, balmy summer night. 

The B-side houses “The Fifth”. A warm, percolating, arpeggiated bass line acts as the driving force on this stripped down excursion, while gentle automation lends a crackling neon glow to proceedings. It’s a slow burning affair that peaks as gleaming hi hats slice through the darkness to reveal another mystical riff, dancing and flickering in the twilight.

Kristina Dunn aka DELLA was the first Jaeger Mix guest ever to grace the Sunday night mix series. She’s been an inimitable force at Jaeger, spurring the roots of House music in Norway through her American links and her  DELLA’s Drivhus residency. Formerly of the duo, No Dial Tone, Kristina Dunn has carved out a solo career as DELLA since disbanding with productions and DJ sets that delve into the deeper aspects of House music and has spawned collaborations with the likes of Lil’ Mark and Homero Espinosa.

From the studio to the booth, DELLA has maintained that original spirit that first took her from the floor as a dancer and installed her in a booth as a DJ. It’s all about the dance for the DJ and it’s something she continually perpetuates at her residency through her sets and the calibre of guests she invites to the booth, guests like Honey Dijon, Tommy Bones and Homero Espinosa.

Once again she channels this spirit through a pair of decks and a mixer as she makes her third appearance on the mix series. A sultry mix of deep grooves and warm keys ensues. DELLA plies her craft in her distinct way for a set that travels through the four-four depths of House music to the jacking beats of Chicago, perfectly suited to take us from the early part of the evening to making those first steps towards the dance floor.
