Berlin based, Italian born, Alessandro and Federico Fognini are not just brothers in arms but actual brothers who have been growing up together their whole lives. Which might help explain why these 2 recent arrivals on the scene have already established a sound much more mature than their years might suggest.

It's this intense maturity that they bring to this debut EP. With a sonic depth acquired by many hours already logged in the studio and a sophisticated world view that comes across in the stories their music tells, Mind Against (as they are more formally known) make pictures with their sound and their pictures tell more than thousands of words could tell alone.

On their Atlant EP they paint us a picture of lost civilizations and intergalactic missionaries. Transdimensional creatures that visit us in our dreams and in our visions, bringing us coded messages about the future from a place beyond time. Where everything can be reduced to vibrations and controlling sound waves is akin to controlling a physical reality. With a throbbing beat and epic melodies they build towers of steel and halls of philospher's stone. Places of thought and worship where futurstic sounds hold court with swinging percussive beats, telling us tales of how we can work together to overcome the challenges of our immediate circumstances and reunite the illusions of our separate selves once again into a whole being. A whole and complete universal concsiousness with a deeper understanding of its true self.

Almost a year after the release of Peter Van Hoesen’s highly acclaimed album 'Perceiver' on his Time to Express imprint, the Belgian producer returns with ‘Life Performance' - a brand new live recording which was captured into a single, long- form listening experience during a specially curated Time to Express label night at Tresor on July 19, 2013.

Coming in October on Berlin's techno institute and record label, Tresor, this new live album represents an important step forward for the producer. Since 2006, Peter has played live in a variety of different settings and situations, from festival circuits and dark, sweaty venues to working with dance and theater companies on stage. Each live performance brought with it a necessary evolution in approach, which led to a varying sense of real ‘live’ interaction. At first, with a setup centered around a laptop, a drum machine was added, then slowly more and more machines entered into proceedings. 

Ultimately though, it was the computer that was to hold central guard in the coordination of each disparate sonic element.

Now, the laptop is being pushed aside, making way for the hardware to be brought fully to the fore, allowing for greater artistic freedom and expression. The focus is to be placed upon live improvisation in the creation of something wholly unique and ever-evolving. Sculpting this sound in real-time, allowing for the exploration of a multitude of possibilities and contorting parameters, in essence, a child-like approach to the idea of ‘playing’, of not being limited by the world around, is what drove this project forward. As Peter explains,

“Making the tracks with the setup in mind as opposed to transposing tracks made in the studio into a live setting is much easier, and much more fun. You can improvise with it freely - and for me that [improvisation] was most important - then decide, in that specific moment, about its tonality and its synthesis. I’m a big fan of synthesis. I don’t work with samples often. If you use samples, there’s no way to really sculpt them - not just from a technical perspective, but also from an artist viewpoint. There’s a freshness and directness you get from being able to interact with the music and audience on a much deeper level than normal.”

Over the course of sixty minutes, the listener is exposed to a broad palette of sounds and patterns. Textural shifts, gentle rhythmic blends, dynamic synths, hooks and arpeggios coagulate into an exceptional aural experience, exemplifying an approach to music production in a live context that is both personal and unique.

Like Brassaï, Roger Semsroth has spent the last decade trawling the shadows and writing in the dark. But where the seamy streets of nocturnal pre-WWII Paris provided the canvas for Brassaï’s widely heralded photography, it’s the sonic sluices of post-war Berlin and from the self-contained netherworlds of the city’s underground techno nexus that Sleeparchive derives from.

Taking its title from one of Brassaï’s famous sequence of prints, ‘A Man Dies In The Street Pt.2’ presents the second round of the eight track project developed by Sleeparchive (along with three secret locked grooves.)

As ever the genius is in the reductive palette, that here Semsroth paints into a rich splay of emotions mimicking the initial anxious discovery of the body, the curiosity of the gathering crowd, the excitement and building anticipation through to an aggressive and pummelling sense of realisation on the close. But is it at the loss of life, or the loss of spectacle? As Brassaï toys with ambiguity in his photographs, Sleeparchive’s music is just as hazy, deep and full of shady nuances that, like treasure, only appear if you’re willing to keep probing.

It's been high time for GUI BORATTO to endow us with another tasty slice of that enticing pop- infused techno of his: since the last Boratto- helmed offering TOO LATE (KOMPAKT 285) had conquered 2013's floors and beaches, we've seen the Brazilian mastermind occupying himself mainly with bringing his own label D.O.C. into position. Now, the Kompakt stalwart returns with TAKE CONTROL featuring Brazilian duo COME AND HELL, his first original material in 2014 and a perfect tune to ring in the summer.

Fitted with a glitzy array of top-tier remixes, TAKE CONTROL presents itself as a strong addition to GUI BORATTO's back catalogue, revelling in the kind of hook-driven pop techno that we love so much. Again dropping silky vocals on top of a well-oiled club machinery, the new track enlists the help of fellow Brazilians COME AND HELL and is an obvious contender for the pole position in this year's dj crates. A wealth of perfectly cast remixes rounds off the release, featuring intriguing takes on the sophisticated source material.
The first out the door are DJs PAREJA, the two Argentinian daredevils responsible for wrecked floors worldwide, thanks to bold releases on gatekeeper imprints such as Cómeme or Huntleys + Palmers. Their version pairs the original's streamlined vocal with the brutish thump of their other work, sending crowds into a frenzy with the flick of a button. In his revamp, US tracksmith DANNY DAZE teases out a similar amount of propulsion, but finds a different level of cray cray with a break as massive as it is insane. Upcoming Amsterdam hotties WEVAL finalize the package with an irresistibly melodic bassline and epic gauge. Perfect run!

Constantly turning around itself, the winding melody of Vertere turns outward and inward at the same time, bringing the listener on a journey outward while mirroring a simultaneous labyrinthine journey inward. Like the word itself, Vertere, with its roots in the Latin word Verto (which itself takes its roots in the earlier Sanskrit word, Vartayati) it signifies the very nature of change itself. It means both to turn and reflect inward and yet also move forward — a call to action for setting in motion new things. A paradox at first glance but also perhaps a surprisingly accurate description of the destructive and reconstructive nature of creation. An apt metaphor for this bright new collaboration between established Life and Death artists Mind Against and the new artist project of Federico Maccherone, aka Somne.

On remix duties, when you have an artist of the caliber of Tobias Freund, you don’t need to ask for anything more and with his outstanding remix of Vertere he very clearly shows why. This long time mainstay of the electronic music scene has managed to stay not just relevant but on the cutting edge longer than most with respected releases on some of the most seminal imprints to be putting out music in the world of underground dance music. With Vertere he takes what’s already top quality material and somehow manages to turn it inward and in his own unique way elevate it to another level entirely. With a relentless beat and a sonic force that is hard to describe with mere words the Tobias. remix of Vertere comes out of the gate like a runaway machine rapturously drunk on its own self awareness. It marches ever forward, full of fervor, and will surely be driving dance floors both large and small to the euphoric edge of the ecstatic state.

Synonymous with Detroit, Techno, and Tresor, Scan 7 have remained protagonists of the Berlin-Detroit axis since it was first forged in the sweaty obsidian of the club’s original Wertheim vault home. Now, over 20 years later, the masked techno collective pay tribute to the triptych’s matted histories on ‘The Resistance EP’.

With identifiable nods to Scan 7’s Underground Resistance affiliations – the label that launched the group, and whose militaristic and political philosophies can be found littered throughout their discography – the EP begins with quintessential Detroit strings and groove before delving into darker techno territory. On the A-side, “The Resistance” offers an uplifting and delightfully nostalgic jaunt through dance music past, using all those favourite and immortal house tropes to deliver instant gratification. Meanwhile, the B-side shows off Scan 7 as masters of warm, yet shadowy techno – plus their trademark drum work – in the hypnotic “Why Not?” and driving, basement-ready “In & Out Of The Groove”. 

Alongside many outings on Tresor’s renowned compilation series, Scan 7 produced two albums for the label – ‘Dark Territory’ in 1996, followed up by ‘Resurfaced’ in 1999 – before leader TrackMasta Lou’s Cratesavers Muzik took over as the group’s primary recording outlet. ‘The Resistance EP’ is a welcomed return to Tresor from one of its stalwart artists, and paves the way for a retrospective compilation on 20 years of Scan 7, due out at the close of the year.
