Above & Beyond return to the dance floor with ‘Tranquility Base Vol. 1’, a collection of five heavy-hitting club records, calling back to their instrumental roots. 

The GRAMMY-nominated founders of Anjunabeats have been quiet of late. Following six months of studio hibernation after their sold-out Group Therapy 500 celebrations at Banc of California Stadium last October, Jono, Paavo and Tony have been busy working on their next extended project.   This April, they make their return to the dance floor, with two sold-out shows for Printworks London’s closing season, and a love letter to their instrumental club past: the launch of the ‘Tranquility Base EP’ series. 

Above & Beyond’s Tranquility Base alias was revered for its contribution to the trance genre, including iconic records such as ‘Surrender’, ‘Oceanic’ and ‘Razorfish’. The ‘Tranquility Base EP’ series showcases the current instrumental records firmly lodged in Jono, Paavo and Tony’s record boxes. 

Above & Beyond’s ‘Angry JP8’, the electro-edged lead single off ‘Tranquility Base Vol. 1 is out now, with the full EP arriving May 25. 

Above & Beyond will headline The Gorge Amphitheatre on July 21-23 for the biggest iteration yet of their Group Therapy Weekender festival, alongside label stars from Anjunabeats, Anjunadeep and Reflections. Tickets are on sale now (aboveandbeyond.nu/gtw).

Seventeen years after his first release on the label, Sunny Lax brings fans his debut album, ‘Crystals’, out now on Anjunabeats.

Levente Márton, known worldwide as Sunny Lax, has been a mainstay on the Anjunabeats roster since making his label debut with ‘P.U.M.A. / Casseopeia’ back in 2006. Over thirty releases later, he delivers his first official LP. 

‘Crystals’ marks the pinnacle of a story that began in November 2022 with the release of Sunny’s ‘Emerald EP’. His ‘Ruby’ and ‘Amethyst’ EPs, which followed in early 2023, were the next stages in an expanding and evolving body of work. Now, combined with five new tracks, ‘Crystals’ sees Sunny unify these EPs into a 14 track album. 

Levente was born in Romania to Hungarian parents and moved to Dunaharaszti, a small town near Budapest, when he was four. His musical journey began when he was just 13. Levente’s sister worked in the city library and brought home CDs for him to listen to. “There were a lot of artists from different genres,” he explains. He learnt how to produce after watching tutorials on free CDs from magazines, and soon spent his spare time perfecting chord progressions and melodies. 

Levente wasn’t initially interested in clubbing, and didn’t learn to DJ until after his first release in 2006. “Back in those days you had to send CDs to labels in the post,” Márton says. “I sent ‘Cassiopeia’  and ‘P.U.M.A.’ to 9 or 10 different labels, and Anjuna loved them.” Above & Beyond played ‘P.U.M.A.’ four times in a row on their Trance Around The World radio show. 

As festival bookings racked up and his career grew, Levente continued to work at his local library, enjoying the stability of his day job alongside the excitement and pace of his life in music. But after releasing his track ‘Enceladus’ in 2015, everything changed. “That’s still my most popular track,” he says. “So many big artists played it at huge events.” 

The success of ‘Enceladus’ was unplanned. Levente remembers messing around in his studio, relaxed, happy and with no intention of producing a hit. “Sometimes when you’re in that state something pure and effortless comes out,” he says. “I think trance is an excellent tool to share emotions,” he says. “I know my productions are my way of channelling my emotions.”

‘Crystals’ is inspired by Levente’s increased spiritual awareness as a result of the pandemic. “Everything is a vibration, and there’s an organising pattern behind everything,” he says. "Certain crystal structures can elevate and heal, some can impact your mood.”

Above & Beyond’s first original collaboration single since 2010 (for those playing at home, that was ‘Anphonic’ with Kyau & Albert) sees the production powerhouse of Jono Grant, Tony McGuinness and Paavo Siljamäki link up with prolific San Franciscan, Spencer Brown.

‘Long Way From Home’ featuring the vocals of RBBTS (Anne Kalstrup & Hendrik Burkhard) is a gentle, melancholic wave of undulating melodies, underpinned by the quartet’s rounded, dancefloor-ready sound. Debuted at Above & Beyond’s Group Therapy 300 celebrations in Hong Kong, the song considers the experience of loneliness that besets many touring artists. Aptly, the first sketch of the track was laid down by Paavo and Spencer in a Melbourne hotel room - a very, very long way from home.

Says Paavo, “Both Spencer and myself know all too well what it's like being a touring musician.
Filled with totally amazing, high moments, but also lonely moments in hotel rooms far away from home. We'd both been travelling for hours feeling somewhat lost and lonely and ended up spending the day together talking about it all. Later that night, we found ourselves making a song about it all in a makeshift hotel room studio”

Spencer Brown has just finished a world tour with Above & Beyond, playing direct support to crowds across North America, Australasia and Europe. A star on the rise, Spencer is already a mainstay on Above & Beyond’s Anjunabeats imprint. The prolific 24 year old released his debut artist album, ‘Illusion Of Perfection’, on the label earlier this year.

Anjunabeats, the iconic record label founded in the year 2000 by Above & Beyond, celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. As part of the celebrations, Jono, Tony and Paavo today announce the 15th release in the celebrated ‘Volume’ series.

Crafted by Above & Beyond in their London studio during lockdown, Anjunabeats Volume 15 signals the direction this label is heading in.

Volume debutants include Jordin Post, Le Youth, Spada and gardenstate (a new project from Marcus Schössow and Matthew Felner) are joined by label stalwarts Andrew Bayer, Genix, Gabriel & Dresden, Oliver Smith, Mat Zo, Jason Ross, Tinlicker, Sunny Lax and, of course, Above & Beyond.

Disc one, a deeper, progressive mix, features a selection of exciting Anjunadeep talent on display: Marsh, Qrion, Durante & HANA, Frost and PROFF. The mix builds up to disc two, where Above & Beyond takes full flight.
