I AM HONORED TO HAVE DONE THIS BEAUTIFUL COLLAB (OUR FIRST AND NOT THE LAST) WITH THE GREAT JOHN PALMER https://soundcloud.com/john-palmer WHO I HAVE ADMIRED FOR A VERY LONG TIME AND THE TIMING WAS FINALLY RIGHT FOR US TO CREATE SOME MAGIC TOGETHER.  JOHN'S SILKY SMOOTH AND ON POINT VOCALS SIMPLY SHINE (I MADE CERTAIN THEY WERE THE FOCAL POINT) IN THIS TUNE.  THE MOTIVATION FOR THIS TUNE WAS ME PURGING SOME REAL DEMONS IN MY LIFE AND MOVING ON FROM THOSE WHO REALLY DO NOT HAVE MY BEST INTERESTS IN MIND AND WHO I REALIZED ARE ACTUALLY VERY SELF ABSORBED.  SO, THIS IS A CLEASING TUNE FOR ME.  I ASKED JOHN TO LAY DOWN SOME VOCALS BECAUSE I KNEW WHATEVER HE CAME UP WITH WOULD SIMPLY WORK, I NEVER HAD ANY DOUBT.  THIS IS THE KIND OF TUNE THAT YOU CAN HIT REPEAT TEN TIMES, LAY ON THE COUCH, AND FADE AWAY WITH A GOOD DRINK, A GOOD SMOKE, OR JUST BE WITH YOUR THOUGHTS, OR SIMPLY NONE AT ALL,,,BIG LOVE TO ALL AND THANK YOU JOHN, I AM HONORED TO HAVE COMPLETED THIS TUNE WITH YOU MY FRIEND.

Like most people, I have heard this song many times, read the poem.
 But now I understand the depth of this poem, so sore and fragile. 
Thank you from heart Debra and Phil,  two wonderful musicians. A JOY.

If you need one poem for regrets in your life, then it must be this poem. 

Down by the Salley Gardens was written by W B Yeats (1889), who is generally known as one of Ireland’s greatest poets.

    Down by the salley gardens my love and I did meet;
    She passed the salley gardens with little snow-white feet.
    She bid me take love easy, as the leaves grow on the tree;
    But I, being young and foolish, with her would not agree.

    In a field by the river my love and I did stand,
    And on my leaning shoulder she laid her snow-white hand.
    She bid me take life easy, as the grass grows on the weirs;
    But I was young and foolish, and now am full of tears.

 Yeats published the poem in his collection, The Wanderings of Oisin and Other Poems in 1889. 
In a note on the poem, he said that he was trying to reconstruct an old song he had heard being sung by a woman in the village of Ballisodare in Sligo.

Down by the Salley Gardens was written as a poem and remained that way until 1909 when Herbert Hughes set it to music using the old Irish melody, The Maids of Mourne Shore.
