This track is my very personal take at the Koan "Hear the Clap of your Hand". My lyrics version (https://soundcloud.com/konrad-spittelberg/the-clap-of-one-hand-pp) might make things clearer. (yes, this is my sneaky strategy to guide you from one song to another :-))

Compositionwise, the track is roughly split into two equal parts. The first part introduces its cinematic theme in the very beginning, taking it thereafter up several times with slightly different accentuations and rhythms which gives it a fresh feel with different highlighted nuances in each repetition. Several interludes contribute to the cinematic feeling. 

The second part, starting @1.53 starts by a more Jazzy version of the main theme. However, from 2.20 onwards, it is very restricted in its harmonies - only two harmonies are used from thereon until the end, C major and C# major. The tension arises purely from the rhythmic changes (such as the shift from 4/4 to 3/4 @3.17 and back), climaxing at the end.

On our recent trip to Italy, one of the places we stayed was Monterosso, one of the 5 villages in Cinque Terre. From our patio, we were able to see Il Gigante looking out over the ocean. I am pleased to announce this new music collaboration, Il Gigante di Monterosso - Feat: Sergei Govorov, celebrating the beauty of Italy.  Listen to Sergei's music on Spotify and Apple Music.
Sergei Govorov completed his doctoral degree at the Gnessin Academy of Music in Moscow with the highest honors.  In 2022, Sergei moved to the United States.  Sergei's repertoire ranges from classical saxophone to avant-garde, jazz, and pop. He has performed over 4,000 concerts worldwide.  For the last year I have been writing music for the sax and piano duo, Govorov & De Groot.  Sergei Govorov and Britta De Groot have performed my music in Colorado and have future plans for more concerts and possible recordings.

This is an old band recording I never planned on sharing. We were practicing in a hall, and one of the guys used to record our sessions, this is one of those takes.

It was many years ago, before I lost the ability to lift my arms. But when I listen, I’m right back there, breathing music into the room with people I cared about. It brings me back so vividly it hurts a little, a lot actually, bittersweet doesn’t quite cover it

The whole thing was improvised. I used to be able to play the saxophone like some people whistle, hearing the tune and responding without thinking. It just flowed, it was the one thing I really excelled at.

The quality’s terrible, I know. This was never meant for anyone else, just a moment captured for us, for joy, for memory, for connection. But I’ve been sharing more of myself lately, and this was, or is, a big part of me.

It’s not perfect. It’s not clean. But it’s real

💜 For anyone who’s had to let go of something they love, this is a piece I got to keep.

I just redid the mix and fixed the drums, and some of the more glaring vocal problems, and got that cool guitar lead to shine a little. It sounds a lot better now.

I wrote this piece last year, shortly after I had come to my 75th birthday, and as my 76th is fast approaching, I thought to share with you this piece now......

In my head I had the idea of the bazaar in this track being a mixing of cultures, ideas and the buying and selling of goods. Despite the heat, it is a place that never truly sleeps although it's mood changes throughout the day and into the evening. A meeting of minds, cultures, jarring, exciting and exotic.

With that in mind I thought of an initially busy track with discrete sections to denote different parts of the bazaar that also changes from day into evening. 

I created a basic intro and then let Dave weave some of his keyboards into the mix. I then set to work on trying to give the idea of entering new parts of the marketplace and in the end a simple tam-tam crash seemed to work well to suggest a new vista or mood as the listener moves through the track. Different darbuka rhythms really helped here and also changing up the featured instruments. 

The later part of the track is hopefully suggesting later in the day, as the temperature decreases and many vendors shut up shop for the day. But it never truly closes so the outro reprises the initial riff as it fades out.
