“This album is about the cold dark grey Berlin winter” – Marc Houle.

A simple statement, sure – but anyone who experienced Berlin during the winter of 2009 / 2010 will know exactly where Marc is coming from. Each day and night the temperature remained below freezing, the sky grey from an unsettling lack of sun. Ice covered streets from Kreuzberg to Prenzlauer Berg. The conditions did, however, grant Marc the opportunity to spend all of his waking hours in the studio, absorbing the warm welcoming heat generated from his analogue synths. The experimentation during this winter period was the catalyst for Marc’s latest long-player for Minus – quite possibly his most accomplished and personal release to date.

Drift is an album of tracks inspired by the prolonged Berlin winter, and the depression, which it so often causes – from the chill of the coldest nights felt on tracks such as Inside and The Next, through to songs that encompass the frustrations of gray skies such as Seeing In The Dark. Marc has created a season of emotions and in doing so put forth his own personal frustrations towards what is considered “techno” in its most basic form. Locking himself away during a winter season to fully embrace his own idealism has resulted in an album on which his rebellious nature and desire for a more experimental musical mentality has cast him further from the standard practice of our techno underworld. His grievances are at their most clear on the title track, which is an intense, and ultimately angry, techno belter produced as the winter season caused feelings less of “beauty” and more of suffocation.

Drift is not without moments in which the sunlight peeks through the layers of heavy clouds, however. Tracks such as Sweet and Hitcher Man provide the audible interpretation of a person dreaming of warmer climates. The not so forgotten idea of being elsewhere, with the experience of finally seeing the snow fade away and the clouds drift towards springtime skies. By the time the album reaches its finale, with the track Hammering, it’s clear that Marc’s winter blues have receded, as the few remaining patches of ice melt into puddles of past musical memories. While summer has not yet arrived, the sun is starting to make its presence felt, warming the city streets once more.

A mainstay of the Minus camp, Marc Houle has been known to push the boundaries with his output for the label, always adding tweaks and twists from analogue synths, unexpected, obscure sounds, and an onslaught of vocals and playfulness. He is a producer clearly not satisfied with following the guidelines set by other techno practitioners. His take on electronic music is one in its own, a personal sound that draws upon his early influences from industrial, retro and Detroit, along with a modern vision of path-finding techno. His ability to play with ideas and equally provide functionality for the floor sets Marc Houle apart. And his latest venture for the label, although inspired by the coldest moments of the year, is undoubtedly hot as fire.

Having already released a pair of albums in 2017, the Northern Electronics co-founder has now lined up the 'Layers of Reality' EP, which is due to arrive on November 27. Ahead of that, we debuted the alternately bleepy and floaty sounds of "The Levels of Existential Space" on Red Bull Radio's First Floor, our weekly look at what's new in electronic music.

Subosc is back in full effect with a new release on shrink-wrapped vinyl.

The A-side is assigned to the techno veteran Mike Parker, known for his signature sound on Geophone. In this release, he showcases two timeless, versatile and masterly crafted tracks.
 
"Trailing particles" presents a solid, well-defined narration with a futuristic, sligthly hallucinogenic synthesis. The reverberation of the analogue synths is precisely crafted, and it gives a spatially evolving character to the track.
"Trireme” features an obscure, alienating, pervasive and shiver-inducing synthesis action, which has a consistent and energetic sonic impact on mind and body.
 
The B-side includes two original tracks from the brand new Italian project R²π, born from the holistic fusion of Retina.it, Prg/M and Ruhig.
"Persona" is a rarefied tale with an intricate scenery, cleverly modeled to give a sophisticated spatial awereness. Bleeps, metallic synths and intricate percussions are put together with a massive bassline for a complete sonic experience.
"Stato Intermedio" takes place with a terrain-to-transcendent voyage. Dark, alarming soundscapes are blended with vibrating and occasionally mind-blasting metallic sounds. Additional bleeps give continuity to the experience proposed in "Persona", offering regularity to the structure of the track, and allowing to dose precisely the mutating action of the synths across the time axis.

@marco_shuttle, real name Marco Sartorelli, has carved out a distinct sound for himself amongst his peers. After receiving a fashion degree from Central Saint Martins, and spending some years working in the fashion industry, the Italian-born, Berlin-based DJ broke out with The Vox Attitude EP in 2011. In the years since, he’s transitioned into producing and DJing full time, with a considerable amount of releases on reputable techno labels such as Peter Van Hoesen’s Time To Express, Donato Dozzy’s Spazio Disponibile, the Bunker New York and his own record label, Eerie. His productions and DJ set sit somewhere in the sweet spot between controlled, heady techno and euphoric, explosive, vast dancefloor soundscapes. Ahead of his set at the Bunker NY party, Marco Shuttle will join us in the studio for a live set and a chat on his early beginnings, forging a relationship with the Bunker and what he has in store for 2019.

The cohesive array of depth charged devices that Anthony Linell has produced is formidable. From his opening statements as Abdulla Rashim on his early label of the same name, right through to his recent work that puts his aliases aside, there is a robust and rigorous intent that compounds the elemental strategies of techno's models to apprehend his singular vision.

Presiding over Stockholm's Northern Electronics label with Varg (Jonas Rönnberg), Linell dispenses with mechanisms of attention on all fronts. Marked by an indefatigable self-reliance, the label presents exactly what it means to display, and no more. Carving an idiosyncratic platform for his music is as great of a warning as there could be that Linell's leveraging little toward the benefit of the audience. By his measure, the familiarity and comfort of contemporary techno is stripped back to its rushing heart, the senses left tailgating the strobe in a fit of intuition over decision. The greater this is exposed the colder it gets, and its in these extremes that Linell's caustic rhythmic precision hits. Live, it comes off as a galvanizing strike from the outside; analysing the room as a DJ, it's a case of being pursued through the dark.

Just as the brevity of Linell's output in the eyes of techno is exalted as it is brought into focus, the background to this blurs as you start to decipher his other projects. Lundin Oil skirts the fringes of noise and experimental music, and in collaboration with Varg as Ulwhednar, this is perhaps even more pronounced.

Purposively ricocheting between the techno world and experimental electronic music, Linell forges a distinct passage that gathers the aesthetically uncompromising motifs and missions from across this spectrum. It's this combination and resolve that's brought Linell to the world's attention, however little that attention has been solicited.
