In this final episode (3 of 3), current and former United Native Friendship Centre employees continue identifying the stages of human trafficking. Also provided are some helpful suggestions when assisting victims of human trafficking and creating awareness about human trafficking.

Episode 3 - Stages & Prevention of Human Trafficking

"Auld Lang Syne" – a Scots poem interpreted and partially re-written by Robert Burns in 1788 and set to the melody of Roud Folk Song #6294 – as sung in 1989, recorded on an Edison wax cylinder phonograph. This is the earliest known recording of this famous song. 

The occasion was not a New Year, but a farewell gathering for Sidney Ray held on 15th February 1898. Ray would shortly depart as a member of the Cambridge Anthropological Expedition to the Torres Strait, the pioneering excursion organised by Charles Cort Haddon.

Ray, Haddon, and the other members of the expedition (William McDougall, C.S Myers, W.H.R Rivers, C.G Seligman, and Anthony Wilkin) would spend over a year conducting fieldwork in the islands of the Torres Strait. They would return with 100 wax cylinder recordings of the songs of the inhabitants of the islands between Australia and Papua New Guinea. This rendition of Auld Lang Syne was therefore recorded before setting of, in order to demonstrate the potential of the wax cylinder phonograph in capturing the human voice. Listening over a century later, it is a great privilege to hear through the surface noise the ritual singing of our own islanders.

This recording is from a collection of more than 240 ethnographic wax cylinder recordings (including the Torres Strait cylinders) published on the British Library Sounds website.

With two framed sketches bought at the Salvation Army store in Guelph, ON, Canada, Erin decides to investigate where they came from and how they ended up there.  She speaks to a few art experts from her community about the pieces and eventually to the artist herself.  The piece is as much about Erin's journey as the sketches themselves.  The piece serves as an example that no stories are small when told well.  A sentimental and personal POV documentary. Blunderspublik - [07] catastrophe (1998)

Exploring seances conducted in 1960s Kitchener by a mysterious medium.  The University of Waterloo Special Collections and Archives has over 150 audio reels of the seances.  This in-progress audio documentary follows creators Erin MacIndoe Sproule and Rebecca Swabey on a journey to learn more about the origins of the tapes and what we can learn from them about contact with the spirit world.

The reels contain recordings of séances from 1960s Kitchener led by a mysterious medium named Mr. Thomas Lacey.  Erin MacIndoe Sproule and Rebecca Swabey from Anthroscope Media investigate the origins of the tapes and what they can tell us about contact with the spirit world. 

This project is supported by a grant from the Region of Waterloo Arts Fund and Ed Video Media Arts Centre. 

This project is exhibited at AFTERLIFE a séance experience at THEMUSEUM in downtown Kitchener September 19th 2019 - January 5th 2020.
