Calling was composed by Calliope Tsoupaki (NL/GR) for me in 2015. The work is a musical expression of the fight against whaling in the exhibition of visual artist Fiona Tan. It is a lamento in which the sea, looking out over the ocean, plays an important role and personal sadness is expressed as well.

Program Note:
“The Cold War, often dated 1947–1991, was a sustained state of political and military tension between the powers of the Western world, led by the United States and its North Atlantic Treaty Organization allies, and the Communist world, led by the Soviet Union, its satellite states and allies. The Cold War began after the success of these countries temporary wartime alliance against Nazi Germany, leaving the Soviet Union and the United States as two superpowers with profound economic and political differences. The Cold War was so named as it never featured direct military action, since both sides possessed nuclear weapons, and because their use would probably guarantee their mutual assured destruction. Cycles of relative calm would be followed by high tension that could have led to war. The Soviet Union created the Eastern Bloc, maintaining the eastern countries that it occupied, as satellite states. Romania was included as well. The Cold War put its stamps on the entire Romanian population, where I lived before immigrating to Canada to reunite with my family here.

BACH-Contrapunctus 6 UMBRATONO Ensemble

ANTONIO ROSALES has realized the Mexican premier of some masterpieces such as "Itou" by Pascal Dusapin or "Échange" by Iannis Xenakis, "Concertino voor Basklarinet en Strijkkwartet" by Tristan Keuris, "Schattenklänge" by Maricio Kagel and "Desde el Instante" by Javier Torres Maldonado. He has performed recitals at the International Forum of New Music "Manuel Enríquez" 2006-2014, "VI Forum for Composers of Nuevo León" 2014, "28 Cultural Fest Zacatecas" 2014, "Cervantino International Festival" 2011-2013 and "Alfonso Ortiz Tirado Festival" 2012-2013. 

In 2012 he is recipient for a FONCA-CONACYT grant to make an artistic residence in Berlin, Germany with the project "Contemporary Bach" with the Berliner Trio XelmYa. The project consisted on a concert series with Bach's "The Art of Fuge" selections along with World Premiers for works by German and Mexican composers.

Antonio Rosales is Artistic Director of the UMBRATONO Ensemble and QUARTZ Ensemble and member of ANEMOS CLARINET QUARTET.
