Long-time residents of San Francisco, the Bachelors of Science trio are renowned in the drum & bass world for creating a unique blend of floor ready, functional d&b. Rene, Chris and Lukeino have all worked together on the project for a long time already, having released their debut album, <em>Science Fiction</em> back in 2008, following it up with Warehouse Dayz two years later. They’re also the latest artists kind enough to put together a mixtape ahead of their appearance at Bukem In Session (they’ll be appearing in Room Two on Friday 30th May) and over their 35 minute selection they manage to get across a whole heap of what they’re about with a deft selection of their own material peppering the tracklist…

Bachelors Of Science - Bukem In Session Mix

On Friday 6th June, the Dutch drum & bass producer, Lenzman, will toast the release of his Looking At The Stars album live in Room One. Released on Goldie’s inimitable Metalheadz label the fifteen track long player explores the Amsterdam based maestro’s brew of overtly musical, soulful blend of d&b. Saying “I wanted this album to be personal more than anything,” Lenzman’s certainly created a balanced album that fully reflects the spectrum of human emotion, [as the press release puts it] “from introspection to confidence and doubt”.

We’ll be catching up with Lenzman in depth and proper next week, but for now he’s pre-empted the interview, his album and the launch party by bestowing on us a 33 minute mix that includes and highlights the potency of a few upcoming cuts from Looking At The Stars…

Something of an unstoppable force over the last decade, Sub Zero has become a very powerful weapon in the Playaz label’s arsenal. Repeatedly impressing and testing the limits of the Martin Audio soundsystem in Room One at the monthly Playaz residency his production has seemingly splintered with him proving himself to be just as adept at making pensive, lightweight, hoover bass driven thought provoking tracks as he is carving out his trademark arresting jump up dancefloor shells – something he proved culpably on his Bi Polar EP. 

Being a regular to Room One and as a member of the Playaz family, we thought it about time that we asked him to put together a mixtape for us that would actually capture the kind of seismic shockwaves his sets send out month in month out. And this… well this is the 42 minute pearler he just delivered ahead of his set in Room One this Friday…

Travelling the world from NZ to UK and reflecting on his experiences, Cern releases his second album “Under Another Sky” on Dispatch Recordings. Captaining an enthralling quest into his creative sphere, this project encapsulates a wide breadth of influences, delivering an all-rounded album that is both diverse and quality in substance.

Cern exercises total freedom across tempos and genres to map out a complex blueprint of his own fictional world; welcoming you to drift off into its atmosphere. As the novel unwinds, “Under Another Sky” delves deep into the senses with seamless transitions; from the progressive amen curiosity of “Infinite Exchanges” through to the off-kilter, abstract forays of “Human Dynamics” and serene instrumentals of “Blumei”.

The LP features a 15 track digital album, hand-picked and arranged to enhance the listening experience, rather than catering or targeting to dancefloor crowds. Vast soundscapes and solo instrumental pieces assimilate with sub-bass pressure to complete an all-encompassing listening experience from start to finish.

Amongst his own solo ventures, guest artist collaborators join Cern to explore the full spectrum of the D&B edge. Rolling early on with DLR for groove ridden “Patterns” and later met by the emotive depth of “Those Left Behind” with Hydro, his darker side accumulates throughout the album, as rugged link ups with Loxy, Gremlinz and Overlook cause untold low end damage.

Experimenting with both orchestral and amen elements to contrasting effect, Cern offers a temporary retreat from reality to take you “Under Another Sky”.

Don't Touch My Face

Outlook is proud to feature the album title track from one of our long time family members DLR, released on one of our favourites Dispatch Recordings.

‘Dreamland’ is the 2nd solo album from Bristol based DLR.
 
Continuing where his 2015 debut ‘Seeing Sounds’ left off, ‘Dreamland’ is an album concept that reflects on the world today; encouraging people to challenge the barriers and comfort zones we blissfully exist within; it’s an inadequate reality we are sleepwalking into.
 
The title track 'Dreamland' most notably features vocals from Gusto; the lyrics of which heavily influenced the whole album project giving you a taste of exactly the kind of concept / message DLR wanted to convey.
 
With various references to time, space and dreaming throughout the project, DLR searches for a deeper meaning within the music, taking a stand against the music which has lost its connection to the roots of this culture.

Ant TC1 along with Hidden Agenda founded Dispatch Recordings back in 2001, Ant originally helped out with the management side of the label before finding his feet within the realms of production; which was a natural progression for him having DJ’d on pirate radio and in clubs from the age of 14 (since 1992).  His first release alongside frequent production partner Stress Level appeared on Dispatch after almost 3 years of hard work getting their collective sound where they felt it needed to be before even thinking about turning on a DAT recorder.  After their first release hit the stores they quickly picked up a wealth of DJ support across their early material and went on to release for a who’s who list of established Drum & Bass record labels including the likes of Renegade, CIA, Advanced, Critical Records Integral, Liquid V, Commercial Suicide, Good Looking Records, Bingo Beats and Samurai Music.

By demand remix work started to feature heavily within their output and the duo went on to remix for the likes of Hidden Agenda, Chris SU, Artificial Intelligence, Kabuki, Total Science, Optical & Ryme Time (Jagged Edge), Atlantic Connection, Tactile & DJ Marky.  Branching out and working with other producers such as Survival, DLR & Philth has only furthered experience Ant’s skills at the controls over the years, Ant has also released his own solo material more recently on top of remixing for the likes of Lomax on Integral Records.  In 2014 Ant realised a lifetime ambition, securing his first ever release for the legendary Metalheadz label “Hungry For Atmosphere” alongside Mako, DLR & Villem with further releases for the label and counting going into 2024.

Ant’s production output has featured on a mass of compilations and mix CD’s compiled by the likes of Shy FX, LTJ Bukem, Total Science, AI, Spectrasoul, Klute and Brian G.  Additionally his work has featured very heavily within the radio shows of Friction, Grooverider, Fabio, Goldie, Bailey & Rene LaVice on their respective BBC Radio 1 slots over the years as well as BBC 1Xtra where Ant once hosted his own one-off 4 hour show, he has since additionally made 2 guest DJ appearances for DJ Friction on his Radio 1 show.  His DJ’ing work has seen him play all over the globe from Adelaide to Los Angeles, from Hong Kong to Sarajevo, Vancouver to Bangkok and last but by no means least regularly UK and EU wide. Additionally for the most part of the decade beyond 2010 Ant also worked as the Artist Manager for both Outlook and Dimensions Festival in Croatia, leading up the booking process, budgets and travel aspects for the festival.

Fast forward through to 2024; Ant is now responsible for the lead label management roles of both Metalheadz & Dispatch Recordings and is based in Thailand, with a purpose built studio room recently finished the plan (alongside managing a mass of planned record label releases) is to get back to focusing on writing music more consistently than he ever has previously.
