Coming from the depths of Utrecht in The Netherlands, powerful
trio Black Sun Empire are set to follow their Beatport topping
fourth album ‘From The Shadows’ with new remix album
‘Variations On Black’. Showcasing some of the most visceral and
volatile drum and bass you will hear all year, the new album
package is due for release on their eponymous record label,
Blackout Music, on late November 18th.

Alongside a selection of special VIP versions from the group themselves, the album features a carefully curated selection of artists on remix duties that draws together a host of the most talented and respected names in electronic music. Artists such as Noisia, S.P.Y., Phace & Misanthrop, Icicle and Ultrerior Motive, amongst others, step up to the plate with fresh reimaginings of BSE tracks.

With a collection of 27 tracks, knockout blows come thick and fast as each artist takes on the challenge with aplomb. Noisia’s rejig of ‘Arrakis’ pays extra attention to the dark side, fighting against the odds with its larger than life tones and jagged saw synth movements, Ulterior Motive’s twist on‘Monologue’ is crammed with perfectly tuned drumwork, and on ‘Killing The Light’, Icicle bites into a Halloween-esque, jump up style movement with sniper-like precision. Elsewhere, BSE deliver VIPs of ‘Drizzle’, ‘Milkshake’
and ‘Hideous’ alongside Audio, Eye D and Noisia respectively, cranking up the pressure as they brilliantly rework them into new dance floor pummeling shapes.

Since bursting onto the scene back in 2000, Black Sun Empire have continued to develop their own unique style and sound. Releasing numerous singles as well as five full-length LPs they have established themselves as undoubted leaders in their field, driving forward not just drum & bass but electronic music as a whole. With their impressive DJ skills and forwardfacing productions, Black Sun Empire have reached far beyond their native Holland. They’ve toured the world over, with highlights including Glastonbury and numerous other international festival appearances, they continue to build on their growing reputation as some of the most exciting and consistent performers around.

Their latest LP, ‘From The Shadows’ further affirmed their position, becoming the biggest selling release on Beatport for 2012, and in doing so keeping deadmau5’ ‘Album Title Goes Here’ off the #1 spot. Released on August 10th via Viper Recordings comes the second single from The Prototypes hotly anticipated debut LP, ‘City of Gold'.

Fully embracing a summer sound with the A-side ‘Don’t Let Me Go’, the production and DJ duo smoothly combine old school style piano chords, signature energized drums and the pulse-racing vocals of Amy Pearson. Already receiving nationwide radio support, the single package also includes a sultry house remix from the talented Jade Blue and an electro-fuelled "Big Top" dancefloor rework by The Prototypes themselves.

The B-side stays true to The Prototypes heavy hitting, galactic-inspired sound, with the whirring ‘Humanoid’. Exciting and rhythmical use of synth patterns alongside vocal interjections make this the ideal follow up to the hugely popular 'Pale Blue Dot'.

Melbourne’s Plasma Audio returns with a fifth single. Plasma has been cutting a a dark and intense path through the drum and bass world with it’s releases so far and this latest addition is no exception. Cursa and Gamma follow in the footsteps of label mates Icicle, Sabre, Fre4knc, Survey, MC Gusto and take up the reigns effortlessly. 

Cursa steps up on the A side with Egg Cup. An atmospheric cloud of sound design sets the scene and when the fog clears we’re off riding on a technically adept roller with plenty of groove to get your teeth into and a host of edits to keep you guessing. 

On the flip, Gamma, takes things up a couple of gears with the aptly named track Warthog. An unruly beast of a track that kicks you hard in the face and give you a solid pummeling all the way through. Another strong single from the Plasma camp to finish off the summer.

Subcom sees Kolectiv & Skulpture stepping up to give us our first release of 2016, Skulpture’s first outing with Proximity teaming up with stalwart producing trio Kolectiv, who themselves have an eclectic back catalogue with releases under their belts from labels such as Dispatch, Different Music, and Nurtured Beatz. It’s truly a track worth waiting for, densely packed with all the components that make a song special; a habitable planet with the perfect conditions for life.

Everything about this track screams energy, and it will no doubt be a great tool for channelling that energy into clubs worldwide. The eerily gentle opening gives way to something frantic, the rhythm kicks in quickly and there is a sense of panic conjured by the high pitched synths. A swift move to low end rumbles then signifies the coming storm, which proves to be heavy in every aspect. Beautiful production allows Kolectiv & Skulpture to create something unique and allows the main body of the track to piece together a collage of styles.

The track shows how Kolectiv’s sound will continue to evolve, with Skulpture’s fresh influence causing waves in the scene in just one release. Subcom is a song that doesn’t fit neatly into a box, it breaks out of them.

Emerging last year as Austria’s latest drum & bass talent to take the world by storm, Martin Mefjus as been on a serious roll with his music featuring heavily in the sets of the scenes biggest players. Never ones to rest on their laurels Critical were listening and snapped him up all for themselves as the latest to join the Critical roster alongside Enei, Foreign Concept, Xtrah and Emperor. Now as he readies his debut solo release on the label, Mefjus looks set to take things up a gear. 

‘Signalz’ has been damaging dance floors at Critical events across the land these past few months and now it’s time to get up close and personal with this utterly disgusting beast of a tune and see what the fuss is about. The build up is all epic pads and smattering percussion but it’s the main event with its colossal bass drone and frenetic drums that’s gonna grab you and never let go until the next tune drops in. Watch for the sick edits and switches to keep you on your toes. Truly big, stinking and nasty! 
Next up label boss Kasra joins forces with the young Austrian on another absolute belting slice of technoid drum & bass that’s been getting Critical’s Fabric sessions in all sorts of bother of late. ‘Cypher’ is pure future with the synth stabs to match and bassline to smash, showing some strong sturdy roots for possibly a few more collaborations from these two. Ant TC1 along with Hidden Agenda founded Dispatch Recordings back in 2001, Ant originally helped out with the management side of the label before finding his feet within the realms of production; which was a natural progression for him having DJ’d on pirate radio and in clubs from the age of 14 (since 1992).  His first release alongside frequent production partner Stress Level appeared on Dispatch after almost 3 years of hard work getting their collective sound where they felt it needed to be before even thinking about turning on a DAT recorder.  After their first release hit the stores they quickly picked up a wealth of DJ support across their early material and went on to release for a who’s who list of established Drum & Bass record labels including the likes of Renegade, CIA, Advanced, Critical Records Integral, Liquid V, Commercial Suicide, Good Looking Records, Bingo Beats and Samurai Music.

By demand remix work started to feature heavily within their output and the duo went on to remix for the likes of Hidden Agenda, Chris SU, Artificial Intelligence, Kabuki, Total Science, Optical & Ryme Time (Jagged Edge), Atlantic Connection, Tactile & DJ Marky.  Branching out and working with other producers such as Survival, DLR & Philth has only furthered experience Ant’s skills at the controls over the years, Ant has also released his own solo material more recently on top of remixing for the likes of Lomax on Integral Records.  In 2014 Ant realised a lifetime ambition, securing his first ever release for the legendary Metalheadz label “Hungry For Atmosphere” alongside Mako, DLR & Villem with further releases for the label and counting going into 2024.

Ant’s production output has featured on a mass of compilations and mix CD’s compiled by the likes of Shy FX, LTJ Bukem, Total Science, AI, Spectrasoul, Klute and Brian G.  Additionally his work has featured very heavily within the radio shows of Friction, Grooverider, Fabio, Goldie, Bailey & Rene LaVice on their respective BBC Radio 1 slots over the years as well as BBC 1Xtra where Ant once hosted his own one-off 4 hour show, he has since additionally made 2 guest DJ appearances for DJ Friction on his Radio 1 show.  His DJ’ing work has seen him play all over the globe from Adelaide to Los Angeles, from Hong Kong to Sarajevo, Vancouver to Bangkok and last but by no means least regularly UK and EU wide. Additionally for the most part of the decade beyond 2010 Ant also worked as the Artist Manager for both Outlook and Dimensions Festival in Croatia, leading up the booking process, budgets and travel aspects for the festival.

Fast forward through to 2024; Ant is now responsible for the lead label management roles of both Metalheadz & Dispatch Recordings and is based in Thailand, with a purpose built studio room recently finished the plan (alongside managing a mass of planned record label releases) is to get back to focusing on writing music more consistently than he ever has previously.
