... this tune is bad-ass! Love the atmospherics and intensity.

Who wants to hear traffic and TV's, doors, clatter and neighbours? So, of course, I went for subdued natural sounds, and found the end result a little foreboding. 
Is there a message in it? Will the sunrise ever come? Look to the east, and be thankful.

Approx. 5 sec grabs taken from "One Minute Alice Springs" and "Third night of rain" were manipulated to fill the 60sec frame: time stretch, filtered reverb resonance, delay lines and the usual kit... This was sat alongside longer takes from "Spin Cycle" (for rich bottom end noise drones and white noise extracted as breathing) and "One Minute Alice Springs" (to restore the natural landscape somewhat).

Disquiet Junto Project 0163: Layering Silence After Midnight
The Assignment: Create a new late-night ambience with sounds from a handful of pre-existing field recordings.

This project is the second in what will be an ongoing occasional series that focus on late-night ambience. Collectively these nocturnal endeavors are being called “One Minute Past Midnight.” No one’s work will be repurposed without their permission, and it’s appreciated if you post your track with a Creative Commons license that allows for non-commercial reuse and sharing.

The steps for this project are as follows:

Step 1: Revisit project #0160 from January 22, 2015, in which field recordings were made of the sound one minute past midnight:

Step 2: Locate segments that are especially quiet and meditative — and confirm that they are available for creative reuse. Many should have a Creative Commons license stating such, and if you’re not sure just check with the responsible Junto participant.

Step 3: Using segments from three different tracks from the January 22 project, create a new work of sound that layers the pre-existing material into something new, something nocturnal. Keep the length of your final piece to one minute

Step 4: Upload the finished track to the Disquiet Junto group on SoundCloud.

Step 5: Be sure to include link/mentions regarding the source tracks.

Step 6: Then listen to and comment on tracks uploaded by your fellow Disquiet Junto participants.

Deadline: This assignment was made in the early evening, California time, on Thursday, February 12, 2015, with a deadline of 11:59pm wherever you are on Monday, February 16, 2015.

Length: The length of your finished work should be one minute.

Upload: Please when posting your track on SoundCloud, only upload one track for this assignment, and include a description of your process in planning, composing, and recording it. This description is an essential element of the communicative process inherent in the Disquiet Junto. Photos, video, and lists of equipment are always appreciated.

Single notes in the key of C, staggered and stacked to move through different chords. "Attack" was eliminated using a combination of my trusted E-bow fed through an EHX POG2 with its attack setting jacked all the way up for max swell. Tape Delay, Phaser, Reverb added for space travel (or ocean travel as the case may be here).

PROJECT

Create a dense stack of attack-free tonal material from one audio source.

Step 1: Choose an instrument that can create extended tones.

Step 2: Record a short loop of a single held tone on that instrument. Use a volume pedal or other tool to eliminate the attack at the start of the tone.

Step 3: Create many more such loops, all with the same instrument, and layer them atop the original loop.

Step 4: Record a document of these layered loops lasting approximately 1 minute.

Step 5: Upload your completed track to the Disquiet Junto group on SoundCloud.

Step 6: Then listen to and comment on tracks uploaded by your fellow Disquiet Junto participants.

A MicroBrute synth connected in feedback-loop through a loop pedal set to 3-seconds with a slight fade out.

Three layers were recorded.  Each one is a single note sustained throughout the loop.  One of them (lower) is a triangle wave with the LFO modulating its frequency, and the other two are square waves with the LFO modulating the pulse width.  

Each layer is a loop that is permanently recording the output of the synth and feeding it back into it 3 seconds later, where it mixes with the sustained note creating textures and patterns by cancelling some parts of the wave and clipping others.  The result of this mix gets out of the synth and back into the loop pedal where it gets recorded and fed back into the synth once again, starting the process all over and creating the evolving sound.
