’Stridulation’, we find, is one of those beautifully descriptive words. Much like crickets or cicadas on solid ground, aquatic invertebrates produce an array of sounds by rubbing their body parts, know as stridulations. These together with the sounds of chewing, grazing, amphibian vocalisations and even plants oxygenating, create rich underwater soundscapes. In this extract you can mainly hear aquatic bug stridulations. But if you listen carefully with the help of headphones, you can also  make out faint munching and the odd low grunt (possibly from an amphibian such as a frog). You can also make out the breeze on the hydrophone cables, creating ripples on the water surface which presumably filter down underwater. And towards the end of the file, human sounds from children playing nearby.
