Being shrouded in anonymity doesn't necessarily mean you're off the radar. That certainly applies to Holland's multi-talent ZES, which means six in Dutch. ZES manoeuvres between atmospheric futuristic beats, forward thinking sounds and innovative compositions built to last. With an instinctive ear for blissed out melodies, sometimes topped with his own voice and the subtle use of his guitar to complete the melancholy, it's no exaggeration to state that ZES' gift of musicality is being put to good use, time and time again.

Mirror Effect

You don't always get to choose what happens to you in life, but you can choose how you respond to it. The old me had died, and the new me was not off to a very good start. I fell into depression. I started drinking a lot. I blamed my behavior on a lot of things that weren’t the problem. People close to me suggested I see a therapist when I first learned I'm adopted. I did, twice, then quit. I resisted. I didn't think I was "crazy". That was dumb. Finally, after a couple intense outbursts and distancing some close friends, with a lot of help and encouragement from my wife, I began to read about the psychological aspects of adoption and anxiety. I started seeing a therapist and was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder. 

Wait. This wasn’t how the story of finding my birth family was supposed to go. I was supposed to be happy, right? Why should I be depressed? I had a great family, a successful business, and I get to DJ for a living. WTF. None of it made sense. I never thought I'd be diagnosed with mental illness. No one does. I faced an uphill journey at this point. To be clear, the anxiety was always there, undiagnosed. I’ve suffered from it my whole life without being able to define it. Learning I was adopted didn’t cause it. It may have exacerbated it, but it certainly brought it into focus.

It's incredibly difficult to talk about mental illness publicly. Even today, people will ask "But you're better now, right?" The stigma is deep and pervasive, which is part of the reason I'm sharing these posts and contextualizing these songs publicly. 42,000 people commit suicide each year in America and countless others succumb to addiction and overdose, and the numbers are only going up. In April, an analysis of Federal Government data revealed U.S. suicide rates have surged to a 30-year high. These aren't just statistics, they're family and friends. We can see the empty spaces in our community.

People suffering with mental illness didn't do anything wrong to bring this condition upon themselves. It's not a virus that's going to make you sick. The silence and shame can be one of the hardest parts. I had no clue, until it happened to me. If you’re suffering, don't let the demons win. Don't let the stigma win. Talk about it and if you hear it, listen. In 2014 and 2015, I was in a psychological free fall. Things gradually started getting better, and ultimately my therapist may have saved my life.

I know what some of you may be thinking. Just focus on the positive things in your life! Just snap out of it. Toughen up. If you have undiagnosed mental illness, it can be impossible to imagine dawn when you're in free fall. By outward appearances, it can seam ungrounded, but anxiety is your mind on fire. You hold on to something, like in my case music. It brings you to sun drenched beaches and perfect nights under blankets of stars, but it’s fleeting. Your family and friends try to reach out to you in the dark and you blindly grasp, hoping to connect to them while the void closes in.

Squareglass "Athlete Whippet" (aka Ballerino and Bunki) are back with their second single "Tired of Being Alone", a shimmering house delight that provides a perfect antidote to post-summer blues. Following a successful release of their debut single Complain, Tired of Being Alone is another slick offering from the Peckham-based duo that further delivers carefully crafted minimalism and dips into melancholic nostalgia. Opening with an extended wavy harmony loop, the track introduces fragmented instrumentals that are progressively developed and conjoined into a lightweight and bouncy compound. As the track moves forward, the Whippets drop cheeky references to genres like deep house, disco and funk, topped with a touch of Latin, bongo-fueled vibe, which together result in a distinguished and rich sound. Bolstered by the pair’s mixing sensibility, the track cleverly fuses live instruments with muffled and fractured audio samples, and creates an intriguing sense of spatial–depth. Tired of Being Alone will be released alongside a more hard-hitting, heavy on samples and percussion remix, premiered here, by "Ross From Friends", who is set to release his much anticipated EP "You'll Understand" on Lobster Theremin's Distant Hawaii in October.

She'd half expected this situation to transpire soon, but the reality was completely different. As the tears began to stain her cheeks, he placed his hand on hers and pulled her close. Since their conception in 2016, London-based duo Athlete Whippet have brought a fusion of musical influences to the table, resulting in timeless contemporary jams that showcase the wide breadth of their musial palette. For their next release titled Your Love Is Lifting Me, which finds a home on the pair's own imprint Squareglass, they continue to explore these signature sounds, this time with both eyes fixed firmly on the dance floor. Renowned for cleverly fusing different musical influences into timeless contemporary jams, Arpy Brown (aka Athlete Whippet) is the musical moniker of Robin Paul Braum. Spread across Berlin and London he's become an integral part of both cities’ scenes in recent years with releases and remixes for the likes of Toy Tonics, Aus Music, Rhythm Section and Kitsuné Musique.

2024 has seen Arpy Brown take his joyful, high energy sets that combine club music’s intensity with the charm and intricacy of none-electronic, organic music, to stages across mainland Europe, the UK and as far as Australia and New Zealand.

Taking a communal approach to music making, Robin co-founded Athlete Whippet together with long-term friend and collaborator Aviram Barath, who he co-ran artist collective and record label squareglass with at the time. In line with this ethos, he's also been hosting intimate nights with DJs from far across the electronic music ecosystem since 2019. Guest sets from the likes of Seb Wildblood, Jitwam, Rebecca Vasmant, Fouk, Amy Dabbs, Hidden Spheres, Will Saul and some of the scene's brightest new talents have made for some unmissable parties in London's and Berlin's cosiest venues.

Arpy Brown's releases have also come with reworks from Ross from Friends, Baltra and Max Graef and have been supported by the likes of BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music, Mixmag, DJ Mag and Resident Advisor.
