For many this is the ultimate Disco Illusion; a record that should have been epoch making in its day, something that would have been a staple for David Mancuso, Larry Levan & Ron Hardy had it ever gotten distribution when it was originally released 34 years ago. Somehow time passed it by and it was only re-discovered in a warehouse in Trinidad last year. Since then it has been gaining momentum fast, with DJ support from Moodymann, MCDE, Floating Points & Kon, as well as original copies selling for four-digit sums. Part of the illusion is in the structure of the record. The A-side begins with a beautiful hazy disco song, but suddenly an Egyptian sounding bridge turns things inside out and the song opens up into stripped back proto-house jam complete with bubbling Sun Ra synths and Black Ark tape delay action. Then there’s the b-side, which sounds like Bob James after he had a taste of callaloo, with deep electronics and a mind-melting steel pan solo.

It's amazing that this track wasn't recorded in the USA because it certainly has that southern roots feel to it. However, this track was recorded in London with Candi Staton's British band PUSH. She wrote the lyrics and they wrote and played the music.

Marcus Printup - Desire

New on the Notwist's label, Alien Transistor comes a new album from two veterans of the famed Weilheim scene. Carl Oesterhelt is best known for his work as Carlofashion and with bands such as Ms John Soda, while Johannes Enders is a veteran of Tied & Tickled Trio, as well as his own Enders Room project. For Divertimento Fur Tenorsaxophon Und Kleines Endembe the duo adopt a musical policy that seems to restlessly shift between fiercely modern classical styles and more polymorphous, jazz-influenced sounds. It's not too commonplace to hear a saxophone leading an ensemble as is the case here, but Enders is an extraordinary player, exhibiting a versatility and level of musicianship that sees him glide fluidly through the schizoid soundscape of this suite. The percussive elements are key to the record's unique sound too, occasionally evoking Moondog's strange homemade arrangements, while in other moments absorbing the vocabulary of the Indonesian gamelan. Wild early work from avant jazz genius Joe McPhee – and a set that's actually pretty darn funky too! This rare indie release features 3 long tracks – two of which were recorded live, with a tight combo that includes a very funky drummer! The album kicks off with the hard wailing "Nation Time", which begins with a shout from Joe, and which rolls into a vamping modal groove (almost Pharoah Sanders-ish) filled with spiritual tenor work from McPhee, and some nice electric piano that sounds very off-kilter – funky, but unusual too. Next up is "Shakey Jake", an excellent 13 minute funk number – with bubbling organ, vamping rhythms, and a nice extended jazz dance groove – one of the rare tunes that has kept the album at the top of collectors' lists for years! And last up is "Scorpio's Dance", a pretty raw and somber track, with a nice open-ended loft jazz quality – balancing things out with a bit of avant energy. New CD version features three great bonus tracks – "Naima", "Blues In C", and "Secret Love".
