Nick Lapien and Robin Koek have earned plenty of stripes exploring different strains of techno and electronica, both individually and together as Artefakt (@artefakt-official). It is their collaborative work which has found a natural home on Delsin, and now their second album on the label, Days Bygone, helps launch the Interstellar series as they continue to explore beyond the dancefloor trappings of conventional techno.

If their 2017 debut album Kinship married forthright techno dynamics with a mellow, melancholic sensibility and 2019’s Monsoon saw them heading into deeper, meditative rhythms, then Days Bygone finds Artefakt leaning even further away from standard structures to create an album steeped in mystery. It’s not a formless ambience they’ve conjured up though - pronounced patterns are still prevalent to propel Artefakt’s productions, but there’s less emphasis on percussion and more time spent shaping soundworlds with nimble arps and gliding pads.

There is still space for beats on Days Bygone, but as on ‘Orinoco Basin’ those drums fall in fluttering formations to gently buffet languid keys rather than imposing on the direction of the music. The heaviest they get is on the dense, swinging ‘Terraforming’, but it’s a light-footed configuration compared to a trad-techno thump, with the drums serving as another texture in conversation with the elements surrounding them.

Because of the shifted focus away from hegemonic beats, it’s left to the keys and pads to define the landscape each track traverses. Sometimes furtive and suggestive, elsewhere pearlescent and diffused across great expanses, it’s these striking, sublime formations which define the atmosphere Lapien and Koek have sought to create. The outright ambience of the closing double act pushes this idea to a logical conclusion, leaving the possibilities open for what comes next from Artefakt.

ABSIS is Salva Coromina, a regular dj on the Barcelona scene since the late 90's under the alias mouseDown/MouseUp, he was resident dj at The Loft (Razzmatazz) and a regular at Sonar for many years, he has always been exploring the deeper side of electronic music moving from ambient to techno. 

Currently ABSIS runs his monthly residency at Laut club in Barcelona under the name of Midline, where he has invited dj's like Vand, Daniel(i), Unjin, Doctrina Natura, Mod1, John Plaza, Guillam, Fon.... He is also a resident of the MOSTRA festival in Barcelona and his productions are released on labels such as hivern discs and Oslated among others.

"Digging is the DJ’s lower part of the iceberg yet one of my favourite activities. I can spend hours going from one release to another, but when “With Eyes Closed” came to my attention, I stopped the process to only focus on it. I listened to it track by track, in full until the end.

My mind instantly resonates with these sounds. There are held by a mysterious atmosphere and a certain melancholy that deeply touches me. There was drama in the first few tracks while tenderness emerged in the following ones.

In the EP, the maturity of the author can be sensed through the sophistication of the work.

"Like opening a door to the unknown or an invitation to a very familiar and intimate place. Crossing that door or inhabiting that place, we make ourselves comfortable, keep silence and listen to a record. This is With Eyes Closed by ABSIS, an invitation to recollection and silence with the sole objective of surrendering ourselves to the pleasure of music and electronic synthesis.

In this release, Absis displays a somewhat obsessive and compulsive mastery of machines. Pure and hard synthesis in search of the perfect sound or at least the sound that the artist is imagining. There are seven tracks that at the beginning call us to contemplation and introspection and that evolves into a collective call to share a dance floor; in short, it is a complete, circular and fantastic album, in the strictest and most literal sense of the word.

In With Eyes Closed each sound occupies its right and proper place, respecting each of its frequencies, its brilliance and intentions. In it, nothing exists just for the sake of it, on the contrary, each element has a function and a role to play within a fantasy: pure and hard synthesis of a remarkable cleanliness and lucidity.

Crossing that door or inhabiting that place it is inevitable to close our eyes, it is a natural and instinctive reflex, as if we wanted to turn off the other senses and surrender ourselves to the ear. Closing our eyes, the music enters through our skin and becomes part of us."

In September 2023, Melifera Records announced a call for producers. We asked electronic music composers to send us a track created using at least one sample from our bank. This bank was made up of field recordings made by festival-goers during a workshop at our festival La Vallée Électrique.

The aim was to celebrate the creativity of our community of French and international artists.

We selected our favourite 20 and asked the legendary Luigi Tozzi if he could support the project with a remix.

This is how Whispers of the Valley was born: a Various Artists in three opuses, the crystallisation of a collective work. From the recording of the samples to the release of these twenty-one pieces of music, we are proud to have made Melifera a creative vehicle for this magnificent community.

Part 2 of this EP series is set for release on 15th April.
