California-bred Robert Yang, also known as Bézier, is an American DJ and producer. While best known for being one of the earliest members of the queer San Francisco musical collective Honey Soundsystem, Yang also produces under multiple aliases and heads three blooming labels, Bodyzone, m-i-v (short for mémoire involontaire), and his most recent endeavor, Piece of Work. Bézier cut his teeth in the San Francisco scene for a decade, and now toggles between Berlin and SF, where he continues to expand his sound and vision into a cohesive yet dynamic mosaic.

Yang moved to San Francisco in 2005, spawning an era of pivotal connection and collaboration that cemented Bézier’s identity as a DJ and producer. Equipped with an array of analog equipment, Bezier has toured in cities across Asia, Europe and the U.S. A master of synth work, Bézier employs a range of analog synthesizers to create highly textured tracks that recall a retro-futuristic soundscape. Though often pop-infused and Italo-leaning, Bézier’s productions also wander the darker spaces of EBM and techno. As of 2021, Yang took on another alias 羅伯特 (pinyin: Luōbótè, transliterates to Robert) under a newly-conceived label, Piece of Work.

Ivy Barkakati is an American DJ and producer based in Barcelona. Her solo music has been released on Modern Obscure Music, SOS Music, and Butter Sessions, and her vocals have featured on tracks by Cardopusher, Furious Frank, and Roza Terenzi. Her project IVAN with the Venezuelan producer Phran self-released their EP Delicious Fantasy in 2020. She is also half of another duo, Proceed, with the Basque producer Eneko Balzategi, and in 2020 their debut EP was released on Haus of Beats. She presented the radio show Casa da Crega on dublab.es from 2016-2021.

AYLI: What's the inspiration behind the mix? Would you mind sharing the tracklist for your mix?

The ecological crisis that we have grown up fearing is here. From monsoon-like conditions along the Hurricane hub of the east coast that is slowly sinking Miami and NYC, to the fires and smog that blanket California and the West coast; capitalism’s chickens are coming home to roost for all of humanity. Michigan had record levels of rainfall this past year that caused extensive property loss, infrastructure damage and even put some of the major highways under water. My studio had some minor flooding. Luckily not too much was ruined, but over 100 records did get water damage. It took about two weeks for me to give them an initial clean and dry.

So I decided to make a mix using records that were affected by the flood. They have yet to receive a deep rinse, so they have a bit more surface noise than usual. In a world that pushes digital ownership and metaverse living ,this is a statement against the artificial clean and sheen world that is projected by the trajectory of our society. I hope that more people try to engage in analog life while they still can.
As George Clinton said, “Think! It aint illegal...yet.”
